Love your playing Pat. I meet you at Grendal's Lair when Buddy Rich was playing one of his last gigs. He made a mention of you in the house that night. Joe Sgro renowned guitarist & violinist ofSouth Philadelphia resident is alive & well. I have posted Joe Sgro video clips on my web site (at) www.geosound.org/video.htm Hey, perhaps I can interview you about Joe? All the best. George Manney

The finals were great, first Lage Lund won, my pick of the finalists. The judges performances were all nice but Mr. Martino was featured on "Footprints", with Bill Frissell, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, with James Genus and Terri Lyne Carrington. The most eclectic peice of the night to be sure. It was nice to hear George Benson play a jazz piece. Thank you Mr. Martino for your generous support of young players. Looking forward to 10/8 at the Lisner.

Just a brief report as to yesterday's semifinal at the Thelonius Monk Int'l Jazz Guitar Competition. BW and I sat next to last row, dead center (Baird Aud.- (at) the Mus. of Natural History - 500 seats, all good) when four rows down in comes L-R: Frissell, Mr. Martino, Russel Malone,Stanley Jordan, Earl Klugh, and John Pizzarelli. That sight was worth the trip. For the next three plus hours we were treated to 10 young players who were each great in their own way. I wouldn't have wanted to be a judge - I agreed strongly with one of the finalists, the other two I would have chosen others, but that was more personal style than their playing. Tonight we'll be attending the finals at the Kennedy Center, where The three finalists will perform, followed by a performance by the composition winner, then the judges will perform. Finally award will be presented to George Benson. Lucky to live in DC and lucky to attend these tremendous events.

I know Pat's music through George Aguire. A Mimai guitar player who once told me a funny story: "One day in Philly I was at a Jazz club and there were all these guitar players stiing in the darkened audience while he (George) was playing with a group. All of a sudden, this guy walks in and the guitarists in the audience stop playing (practicing) their guitars for some reason. This same fellow walks up and plays on the band stand. Man, this guy was great but I dont know... So I says to him after the set. Hey! You sound great man! But you sound too much like Pat Martino... The guy looks up to me and in a real low voice says: Hello, my name is Pat Martino \|

Hey Pat, I just discovered your guestbook now, but I wanted to thank you again for such a cool lecture on the nature of the guitar. I saw you in June I think, at SPU in Seattle, and it was really great. I still have your number and I hope you don't mind if I call you sometime in hopes of a lesson or something!

Pat, Just a belated note to let you know how much we enjoyed your shows at the Bistro at St. Louis in July. The musical excitement of the performances still lives as though it was yesterday. It was great to see some young people giving you their divided attention and some returning the second night. Thank you for the musical experience and the conversation. Duane and Margie Fait
