Pat-It's so wonderful to see that you are doing so well and are so productive!! I just purchased "Live at Yoshi's". What can I say...you sound as great as ever. What a treat to hear you again. It's been a long time since we've seen each other or talked. God Bless you. Keep on playing. You've managed to reinspire me again, but you've always had that effect on me. I hope that you make it to the DC or Va area soon. Last time I saw you was at Blues Alley many, many years ago. Your site is great too. You and the internet were made for each other. Take care. Duane

Dear Mr. Martino, Enjoy your guitar playing greatly. You are an inspiration and a blessing to the aspiring jazz guitar players in this world. I was present when you played at the Dakota in St.Paul, your last visit, Jack McDuffs last resting place. It's sure wonderful to see a player of your caliber come to the Twin Cities. Hope you come back soon. I wanted so much to meet you and get an autogragh, you were busy talking to Jack etc. so I didn't want to bother you. Thanks again for all your hard work and intelligent.

Good point Anthony John, yeah I'd love to read some of Pat's answers to some of the comments and Questions. Is there any hope of that Pat? I think one of things we all struggle with from time to time is to remain motivated. Any tips? Also I think we sometimes all forget or don't know how long it takes people of your standard to get to where you are. We don't hear enough about the hours you put in to get to where you are. I remember once reading that Joe Pass practiced 56 hours a week when he was a kid. I know most kids today learning to play rarely do more than 15 hours a week (many only practice about 4 hours a week) so one might say don't compare your standard with Joe Pass unless you first are prepared to do 56 hours a week. You know what I'm saying? Reading stuff like that can encourage by informing us of the life of our heros etc. Anyway, your playing inspires me and I'd love to know more about Pat the man. I struggle with the human side of things as much as the technical and whilest it's good to know of the theory and the scales and chord substitutions few interviews or features talk about coping with the struggles of the mind, emotions, downs and ups etc..One of the most inspiring things I ever read about you was how you dealt with your illness and BEAT IT. An other one was when Emily Remler said "Don't look at the competiton, stay focused on who you are and what you're doing" Or what Segovia said " I am amazed the ostacles that can be overcome where the WILL IS STRONG ENOUGH" Inspirational man, and believe me we all need to read stuff like that. Thanks for your time.

Pat, I most appreciate the sincerity that comes across as I study your manuals; it is as a gentle leader kindly showing The Way as opposed to the more common encyclopedias of (ego trip name here) dazzling solos that scream: "Check ME out and try to copy me" I spend hours on just one page of your books; they are really gateways to creative freedom. In these dark times, I truly believe music is a compelling messenger of much needed Love and Peace. Thank you and God bless. A.

thanks for the beautiful music.im learning to play jazz and hearing you has helped very much.i have been trying the minor chord conversion concept but i alter the 7th so as not to play a major 7th over V7 when going for flat5 sub ( the note f# when playing g#m verses g7 ) do you edit the same way? thank you again. wess.

Hi Pat, I've been working on my lessons! I've been playing the "melodies" you showed me over the Aebersold scales. Seems to be working! Things are starting to come together. I have a question. I love your round sound and on the Live album and when I've seen you play there is no reverb, yet the sound is full. I think that the way many guitar players "fill it up" is with fuzz and reverb and the guitar becomes more like a string instrument or a sax. You seem to have this paradoxical thing happening, at least to my ears, you fill up the space with a flurry of notes in a very stacato manner; however, the overarching effect is, at least to me, one of a long legato line. It's like the dots on a TV, there are so many of them that the picture seems clear and smoothe or also with the pointalistic artists. This is to me a very satisfying energetic, ecstatic, yet smoothe motion. As I don't have that kind of technique I am trying to "find my voice" I am however finding that phrasing, choice of notes, pulse, and a "relaxed focus" have all helped. Also, while I am on a roll, your approach to using "melodies" as opposed to scales is what I think also creates that flow. I think that that concept is VERY important. Especially to people that improvise. I have been "grasshopper" and apeing and using you as a model. I think that the next step would be to "ape" the idea of finding my on "melodies" so that I can create something personal. For me the playing is the reward and I consider practice "playing." Loved catching you in LA two nites. Hope that your plane ride home was less eventful than mine! We got to circle Phila for 45 minutes. Regarding all of this bad stuff happening in the world...I'm glad that there is also some good stuff...and your good stuff! Lots of love, David Rudick aka Dr. Dave

Hi Pat, You've been a great inspiration to me since the early 70's, when I first saw your 12 point star/octave article (Downbeat or Guitar Player?) I copied it down and pondered it long and hard. I wasn't aware of your bout with health problems until recently, I was out of commision for several years with Lymphoma. I healed myself through various holistic and spiritual methods, only to get a bad case of Lyme disease a year after I had regained my health. I said to God "This isn't funny!", to which God replied "Oh yes it is!". I got the joke, and embarked on another long healing process to regain my memory and the use of my 3rd & 4th left hand fingers. I'm almost fully recovered now. I love this Universe, never a dull moment! Thanks for all that you exemplfy, Pat. Have a happy eternity, Johnny Asia, Guitarist from the Future http://www.mp3.com/johnnyasia "Johnny's music is universal in the truest sense of the term. It embraces the musics of this world and anticipates those yet to be discovered in the future. Hey, anyone who is reading this must be digging Pat's music and his guitar style,so if I may suggest, please check-out Dr. Jorg Heuser's site(click "transcriptions" for details). He offers transcriptions to alot of Pat's recording's and I've recieved two of his book's of transcriptions recently and they are the best that I've ever seen. It's complete head (melody) and guitar solo's with guitar run's analyzed to include scale of origin. I know we all have seen the books before but these are really on the money and I know that I now have a better understanding of what Pat is saying and the genuis of his technique. So fellow jazzers check these books out if you would like to play like pat. I know this sounds like a plug and it is, I'm so happy because I could never have figured out what Pat playing because of the speed of his technique. Now I can. Thanks Dr. J and thank you Pat.
