CHILI: Dear Chili, thanks for the note; as well as all of the appreciation that's contained in it! With regards to "All Sides Now",; it contains some of the most important moments of my life and whatever seemed annoying about Bill Milkowski's article was solely generated by Bill and not by me; I hope you understand. As far as Jim Ridl; I've experienced and continue to experience one of the greatest musical relationships possible and I hope that it never comes to an end!; .... furthermore, yes, Jim does have an album of his own that will be released in the near future and that's the best I can tell at the moment; keep your ears open. Most of all, .......thanks, ... I send you my best!

MICHAEL A> ENDOS Sr.: Dear Michael, you'll never know how important it is for me to be reminded how important life sometimes is for others. The "norm" is to hear the current news through media and in the process be forced accordingly (at times) to experience constant descriptions of so many thoughtless crimes. I guess it's sometimes necessary to be forced to confront ones deepest fears as optimistically as possible, and in doing so gain the blessings that are infinately necessary for a true metamorphoses. (very much like the stainless steel that becomes the result of the metal in fire) Michael, thank you for taking notice of Gods blessings for me as well as for yourself; that's the real beauty of Life!

VINCE JESSE: Hi Vince, the string gauges that I currently use are in this order E=15; B=17; G=24; D=32; A=42 and low E=52. Those gauges were selected strictly for use on a custom Parker Guitar and have been excellent. On other instruments such as the custom instruments that Abe Rivera has built for me the gauges are a little heavier and go as follows: E=16; B=18; G=26; D=36; A=48 and low E=58. As to your hands being small, and forcing you to use .011's keep in mind that that's very natural; in fact, that's the same reason that I'm forced to use such high gauges. My right hand is overpowering at times and tends to break the higher strings. It's because of that I use higher gauges to even it out. With regard to the changes; as well as the melodies of "The Great Stream"; the lead sheet can be found in The Pat Martino Songbook; ( Vol.I ), which is advertised at the beginning of the HomePage. I hope I've been of help and most of all, thanks for staying in touch!

PETER CATLIN: Dear Peter, It's great to hear from you! As to the availibility of "Joyous Lake" in the United States, I'm sure that it could be found in the presence a collector; but I don't think that's going to be necessary much longer. It soon shall be finally re-released by Warner Brothers; although there are no exact dates that have been mentioned as of yet. As to your next question: "Who is Willie Brown?"
Willie Brown; (the father of Delmar Brown) unfortunately passed away one or two days before the recording was set to begin in Miami, Florida 1976. Delmar, at that time chose to make a decision that he felt would truly please his father and that was to be what he was blessed to be and that was to be a great artist; which he still is and always will be. It changed some of my feelings about how important it is to respect a love as deep as it can get and for that reason the album "Joyous Lake" not only was, but still and always will be dedicated to Willie Brown; for sharing his life with us.
Peter, thank's for asking this question. (the first time anyone ever has!) I hope to pergform in the UK someday and when I do I hope we cross paths. Until then I send you and yours my best regards.

MARK GINSBERG: Dear Mark, you have no idea how exciting it is for me each time someone reveals their interests in anything I've done with the guitar. I truly appreciate your suggestions about publishing an extended version on my approach to the " nature of guitar " and I fully agree with you in many ways as to the clarity of what has been published as of yet; including the amount of labor it would demand to complete and publish its full text. Maybe there will come a time that will set itself apart; solely for that purpose; but for now, my main responsibility is to be as prolific as possible in a more " real time " setting as a player more than as a musicologist. Believe me; somewhere deep inside there's always been and still is an appetite to do exactly what you've suggested; but you'll never know how important it is for me to play as much as I possibly can for others who have an interest to experience it live. If you do find a way to alleviate that particular paradox please feel free to share your thoughts on it. Thanks again for your interest; as well as your support.

JOHN AMATO: John, one of the most difficult things for me to accomplish (since some very serious operations that took place at the end of the '70's) has been to clearly remember some of the countless moments of enjoyment that took place at 61 Jane Street (at the corner of Hudson and Jane; on the 7th floor). I do remember a little about those days; not nearly as much as I would like to, but the more I'm reminded; by others like yourself, the more I'm beginning to understand the most valuable things that may be accomplished if one tries hard enough. Thanks for reminding me. ( By the way; I have'nt had enough time to get to your website as of yet; but I will very shortly.) Take care; I send you my warmest regards!

Just wanted to say that we're STILL grooved from your gig a couple of summers ago at The Balcony in Pittsburgh. There are many of us Canadian jazz guitarists who truly dig your music and hope you'll be up this way sometime soon! Above everything else, it is your true spirit of giving and sharing that comes through and for those we are thankful. Can't wait to hear All Sides Now. I'm sending an e-mail to Bill Milkowski of Jazz Times requesting that Blue Note record your working band with Jim.

Just read your responses for October 28: great, so you have nearly survived the month of October. That makes two of us. I got the heck out of New Mexico and am sitting in my suburban apartment on a cot, waiting for the moving van with all my possessions to catch up with me sometime before Thanksgiving. At least I have my wheels. So sorry that my relocation process prevented me from coming to any of your performances or from coming up to you and saying hello. It is marvelous to visit your website and observe all these comments from so many people who care about you; and you can be in touch with all of them regardless of where you are. Will get in touch with you when the movers have been and gone -- really hope to connect with you in person someday.

Hi Pat! I just got a copy of your new CD All Sides Now, and I think it's fantastic! It's an awesome meeting of the minds with Joe Satriani, Tuck Andress, and the rest of your wonderful guests. Thank you for blessing the world with your music. 2 questions for you:
1) As a jazz guitarist, I'd LOVE the opportunity to study with you. The books and videos are great, but not enough. If you ever have an opening for students, or if you're planning any clinics or workshops, I'd love to hear about it.
2) I own a very unique management company for unsigned bands in jazz and alternative music. We do work to help independent artists build their fan base and manage & promote their acts without signing to a major label or artist manager. Considering your vast experience as a touring musician (and the ups and downs you've experienced in your career and those of other musicians), I think you'd appreciate what we're doing. Please accept my invitation to visit our homepage at http://www3.rlcom.net/anarchynet/home.html
Thanks!

Pat-1st and foremost -Thank you for your musicality and approach. It has changed much of the way I play and listen.
-Wondering if you plan on coming to Toronto any time soon? This place is mecca for guitar players and lovers, would definetely be worth your while.
-Curious about your latest release on BlueNote. Although I haven't heard it yet, I was wondering about your feelings to the whole project. The article in Jazz Times (I think it was) led me to believe that you were kind of annoyed and fed up with the "turns" the project took. Was this a project you did to please the record executives or is it something you're glad you did.
-Are you planning on continuing working with James Ridel? I love his rhythmic sense and classical influences. He really enhances your playing, too. You guys sound great together. Does he have any albums of his own?
-Looking forward to your next release, which I hope wil be 100% Pat Martino.

Dear Pat,
It was such a treat to see you at Birdland, on your opening night. I'm sorry that I couldn't get a chance to talk to you longer.
As I told you I have been listening to you since the mid 60's, and wish I could get a hold of your recordings with Don Patterson.
You have been such an insperation ,to me, in my guitar playing, but more important to me is that you have helped me to cope with my affliction of the brain.
Please keep putting out those recordings, and if you ever find the time a book of your life would be something that we could all cherish for our lifetimes.
May God Bless you and keep you in His Infinite Wisdom!
Love, Peace, Health, and Happiness!

Hello Pat, I'm a 25 year old guitar player and I've got almost
all your records. I love your straight ahead eighth-note feel,
but I'm wondering about your setup. Do you really use .016 to
.060 gauge strings or something like that? My hands are small
and I have problems with .012's so I use .011's. I'm also wondering
what brand of strings you use, are they flat or wound round?
Maybe you could post this information or something. I've been
trying to figure out the blowing changes to that tune "The
Great Stream" for a while, did you publish a lead sheet?
Anyway, thanks for the sounds, Vince Jesse

I wrote many months ago trying to track down a copy of Joyous lake (Warner Bros 1976 BS 2977). My sister finally managed to get a copy shipped from Thornbury Hall Record Auctioneers in Los Angeles. The trouble is the record is still shrink wrapped and unplayed so I don't want to break the seal so at the moment I'm still playing my old taped copy. Is thsi record still available in the US or is it as rare as it is over here? Who is Willier Brown to whom the music on the album is dedicated. Any chance of UK dates in the near future ..we can get Stern, Schofield, Frisell, Metheny etc. so why not the great Pat Martino. I'm sure there are enough guitar aficianados over here to fill any venue in the UK. Thanks agaion for your splendid music. Peter.

Pat-san,
I just bought your new CD, and love your sound! I am relatively new to the world of Jazz guitar, and didn't know where to start, but now I know it. Thanks! (PLEASE do some collaboration with Steave Vai!)

Pat, I like your web page. You've probably been told the following a bunch of times, but I will add my vote. You have a unique approach to guitar. Before anything further happens to you, it would be great if you could publish a decently complete accounting of it. Your current publication list is insufficient for others to reconstruct your method. I know that publishing a complete accounting represents a lot of labor, but it would, likely, be your most important legacy. (Just to drive the point into the ground, think about folks like G. Van Eps. Terrific player, but the method has outlived the recordings.) Thanks for many great moments of listening and playing....

Pat,
I am a young guitar player currently pursuing jazz and I must say that your approach to the instrument has influenced me greatly. I've read articles in many different publications and everytime I read one, it opens up doors that I never knew existed. I am sorry to say that I could not attend a concert that you played a while ago but I hope to catch you next time around. Thank you so much and keep up the marvelous playing.

Pat..so sorry to hear I missed your recent Bay area show. I have a numeber
of your earlier albums, have been a fan since I got the live album in high school.
Actually saw you play in a movie theatre in Edwardsville, IL around '77 or so and spoke with
you by telephone in attempt to arrange lessons. Your suggestion that I purchase Slonimski was very helpful
and my guitar playing is still affected by your influence. Though I lost track of you, glad you are alive
and picking.... hope to see/hear you live soon.

Dear Pat, I caught your performance at Kuumbwa and
couldn't have been happier. Your playing was inspirational. I
have been a fan since I heard Consciousness on the radio in
L.A. when the album first came out. I have followed your
career ever since and am so happy that you are 'back.'
Your gig at Kuumbwa was a benefit for KAZU, a public
radio station near Monterey. We had a fire in May and
have recently 'risen from the ashes.' I am the Manager here
and just wanted to say thanks for the music

enjoyed our brief chat. I'm looking forward to any collaboration
you do with Pete Townshend! I was pleasantly blown away by the
show... glad you came back out for an encore!

Just got your new CD (I'm a HUGE Joe Satriani fan, so that's why I got it). Sorry to say I had not heard of you before this. I think this CD is great. I'm a fan of good jazz, but I never know who to listen to or what to buy. Jeff Beck, Pat Metheny, and Al DiMeola are some of those I love. Now I can add you to the list. Great job and keep up the great work!!! Later... John

Hello Pat and Ayako...Thanks again for your appearances here in the Bay Area at Yoshi's and Kuumbwa. I hope you can come again soon. The highlight for me, certainly, was getting the opportunity to speak with you both and interview you for my radio program. The warmth and expression in your voice coupled with the magnificence of your music will surely make for a memorable hour of radio. Thanks for your spirit and philosophy... Pete Fallico

Hello Pat! I'm a 25 year old guitarist living in Denmark, who just got a copy of your new CD "All sides now" last week. I've been unable to remove it from my cd-player ever since. Both your playing as well as your fellow guitarists' are just beautiful. I'm already trying to sneak a bit of your boppin' lines into my own playing. By the way, read the interview in Downbeat with Les Paul. I'm so glad to hear that you have recovered fully and that you are now back again. Love and best wishes for the future - Michael

Pat,
I have been playing jazz guitar for about 15 years now.
Your playing has been a big inspiration for me. I was first
intoduced to your music about 12 years ago from a guitar
teacher who is pretty hot here in the midwest ... Don Hales..
(He Smokes the jazz guitar teachers at Ohio State) I took a
couple of lessons from the folks at OSU a decade ago and they
wondered why I came to them after seeing Don:)
I keep your recordings sorta sacred in my collection:)
I just love turning people on to your playing.
Thanks for what you have done for jazz guitar,
-Mike

Also, Does anybody know the status on the Warner Bros. Albums? Thanks.
To Pat: I've been learning jazz for a couple years now, and your recordings have helped me immensly. Thanks. I would love to see you live sometime.

Pat,
As promised, I caught your opening night at Birdland. It was a beautiful musical experience. I believe you're playing with such confidence and strength now - you really need to record another live album. I loved "Catch" (always a great opener) and "Oleo" was awesome! I look forward to making another performance as soon as possible. Take Care, Bill

Hi Pat, I was able to get a hold of NightWings from a fellow in Washington state. Charlote is pretty baron when it comes to finding your albums. Coupled with your songbooks(my wife let me get them for my birthday) and the recordings I am really enjoying learning from them. I have not been able to find Interchange yet but will keep looking. But I must tell you that Nightwings has fast become one of my favorites. I am going to try to get to Boston to see one of your shows in Late October. Perhaps even met you. Take Care. David
