What a thrill seeing you at Yoshi's, and, prior to that, at the Catalina Club. I've vowed never to miss a chance to see you play. It is obvious that you are enjoying playing for us, too, which makes the whole experience inspiring and energizing. Thanks also for being so friendly and willing to chat between sets... please keep coming to California! Aw, hell, I wonder if I should just move to Philadelphia.

Hello Pat, Thank you again for the thoughtful, though all-too-brief, conversation between sets at Jazz Alley in Seattle (Nov 20). In addition to sharing your response to life's challenges as encouragement to my students, I find your personal graciousness, patience and kindness to your audience such an inspiration for my own life. Your words about remembering the love of playing music had such an effect on me that I began to work on a song on the drive back to Vancouver. Wishing you joy and blessings as you celebrate Thanksgiving! Kate

Pat, I am a 22 year old jazz player and have been amazed with your playing ever since I first heard it. I live in Florida however, and it seems that we don't get the touring attention that the bigger cities do. Will you ever step into Florida soon?

Hello Pat.. El Hombre was the only known recording that the deceased drummer Mithell Fine was honored to be on. I was married to Mitchell in the early 60's and am the mom of his only child, Dana. She was only 4 when he passed away, but she was told about his time spent with your group. She even went out and purchased the album. Would it be possible for you to contact us? It would mean alot to Dana. Thank you. Llana

Dear Pat, It was fantastic to see you play at Yoshi's (11/14 2nd set). I was in the group of young & older 'guitarist' who met you after the show. I have to say that, although your music was an inspiration to me, I was blown away and moved even more in meeting you --by your humanity, and the love emanating from you, which you generously shared with all of us. I can only imagine this gift, like your music, was wrought out of your deep suffering and triumph of spirit. May you continue to bless us all with your gifts and wisdom of what the depth of true human artistry is really about. All the best to you, Pat

Hey Pat: Caught the 2nd set at Yoshi's in Oakland Thursday night, Nov. 13th. What a treat. The place was sold out, standing room only, all eyes forward. The "great stream" continues... We all love you man. ne

Dear Mr. Martino, I am absolutely honored to write to you. My name is Ryuta Nakajima. I am currently teaching painting and drawing at University of Hawaii Manoa. Although I am a painter, "new music" and Jazz have been essential aspects of my research and production. In fact, many of my mentors were musicians and composers. Last year, my wife introduced your music to me. I was completely taken by the tonal and structural complexity of your music. It contained both analytical distance and intuitive/imaginative engagement, both of which, I believe, are essential aspects of music. In addition to your music, I have learned about your past illness. Upon this discovery, my admiration and respect towards you have increased tremendously. Although your struggle is sublimely incomprehensible to me, you have become certain model, which transformed my view and attitude towards my own work as an artist. I would like to thank you for this absolute inspiration and encouragement. I very much hope to see your live concert sometime in near future. With respect, Ryuta Nakajima

Dear Mr.Martino, This is my first e-mail to you. I am very happy to send it to you. Ten years ago, when I was an university student, I met your music for the first time. I was so shocked and moved by your "EL HOMBRE". I listened to it so many times. Ten years had passed scince then. I got married and moved to Hawaii from Japan. My husband plays the guitar and he started to learn jazz guitar. His first contact with jazz guitar was music of Wes Montgomery. He bought Wes's score book and practied every day and night. By the way, he plays the same song hundreds of times, so I could memorize all the melodies completly! That is funny. Well, one day I introduced him your music and he was knocked out. Then he began to search your CDs and practices the guitar with a score book. Now I can hear his "El Hombre"...It seems like he will take a long long time to master it. Today we bought your new album "THINK TANK" and it was so great! We not only enjoy musical aspects but also very interested in the diagram in the booklet. We will continue to enjoy your music for long years to come. Sincerly, Aya

I'm a mathematician who dropped his calculator for everything that is music and specifically jazz guitar. I just came back today from an audition at Roosevelt University here in Chicago and I had just learned of the architecture that you pointed out many times. I had always observed and marveled at the seven musical cycles of the chromatic scale but was given a whole new wave of inspiration from this system. I have a trio with G/B/D and utilize a T.C. Electronic G-Major effects processor. Obviously one expects a batch of great choruses and such, but I am really marveled at the musical potential for guitar in the harmonizing effect. I have set up patch via a MIDI pedal to call up perfect intervals and even chords on my lines. This is so far a project of mine but I have been playing with a perfect 3rd and 5th patch and then go to play with "giant steps." It's a bit much for me just playing the tune without the added notes, but I ask if you would pursue a harmonizer yourself and experiment with further multiplying the music! Thanks Pat

Pat, your soloing was excellent at the annual jazz festival in Pittsburgh November 1. I regret having missed the seminar--I planned for the wrong seminar (last year's) My earnest prayer is that you'll return to Pittsburgh again in the near future and I'll be able to join the seminar and hear you again. Oh, you might have your manager or whoever talk to the audio people at Carnegie Music Hall if you plan to return next year. I heard your soloing but not otherwise. By the way Tony Janflone, Sr. is my teacher (he has played with you informally). Hope to see you again soon! God bless!

MR MARTINO MY ADMIRATION TO YOU IS SIMILAR TO A FRANK ZAPPA FAN!! I HAVE BEEN TO YOUR CLINIC AT AMSTERDAM CONSERVATORY, HAVING ALREADY SPENT 3 YEARS OF CONSTANTLY LISTENING TO YOUR MUSIC AND I CAN SAY THAT YOU HAVE FULLFILED EVERY EXPECTATION I HAD OF YOU.THANK YOU FOR THIS WONDERFUL APPROACH YOU GAVE TO US,I WOULD JUST LIKE TO ASK ONE QUESTION-WHICH IS THE MOST SUGGESTABLE WAY TO STUDY? BECAUSE I AM SICKED TO DEATH OF PRACTICING SCALES,LICKS AND ARPEGGIOS AND I FEEL THAT MY MUSICAL ABILITY IS NOT AT ALL BEING HELPED BY SUCH AN APPROACH.. MAYBE A SILLY QUESTION BUT I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE YOUR-MUCH RESPECTED- OPINION ON THIS. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR EXISTING IN MY WORLD OF MUSIC

This is an incredible site. My thanks and compliments to Mr. Martino and the webmaster(s). While I'm commenting, I would like to humbly suggest a Southern Tour (of course winter time would be ideal, I remember Philadelphia winters...). There are many who are inspired by you down here!

Hey Pat, just a couple friends checking in from L.A. I see that you are playing the Tin Angel on Dec. 13. Are you planning on any other holiday dates in Philly? We last spoke at the Catalina, back in February. As always, we are completely moved and inspired. Please come back soon, the Catalina is moving down the street on Sunset, bigger and better they say. Take care and best wishes, Carrie and Mark
