Pat's Guest Book archive, November, 1999.
Hi, Pat and Joe,
Your guestbook is fascinating to read... I love all these guys who get in touch with you...
I see there is at last a European tour planned for 2000. How wonderful. I'm very thrilled. The jazz correspondent of our London evening newspaper (a PM fan, of course) told me that you were booked to do the London Jazz Cafe this summer but it didn't happen? Is that true? What happened there? This sort of thing doesn't seem unusual for the Jazz Cafe... Clara Moreno and Airto were both billed then cancelled (what's going on there?).
Joe, can I call soon you to find out more about Pat's dates? Or you can e-mail me, if you have time, and we can talk. I'm doing some writing for some British jazz magazines. Maybe we can do a story? How's London looking on that itinerary?
Some very interesting Japanese import Pat Martino albums have recently found their way into the racks of Tower Records here. Just too tempting...
Looking forward, too, to the new Eric Alexander album (love him on the Stone Blue album -- the track 'With All The People' is my favourite). When's his new album coming out? If you can let me know, I'll do some gentle 'suggesting' to those who are on our side at JazzFM, the radio station. Maybe we can tie it in with news of the dates for 2000. We need to talk.
Talk to ya soon.
much love, to you both...
Chrissie xXx
ps Baden Powell live in London (one night only at Ronnie's) last month was just AWESOME! Wow! Hardly any pre-publicity but there was standing room only... We get so few visiting guitarists here. Ralph Towner has just been through, but didn't play London! Only Manchester and Brighton, for some reason. Oh, we've had Peter White -- last month... No offence to PW, he's great, but... Yeah, The Wave is washing over London, too. Please, come and rescue us with your heart-stopping, thought-provoking music! Yeah! Alvin Youngblood Hart was here for the recent London Jazz Festival... he was amazing!
Our own fabulous Jim Mullen is at Ronnie's all next week. That'll be fantastic. You heard him? Terrific! And Carl Orr is a nice guitarist -- he's Australian but based here... works with Billy Cobham's band a lot.

Hi Mr. Martino, I'm a Great Fan of your style of playing Guitar. The first time I heard only 2 pieces of you (Oleo and ??). I recorded it on a Tape in 1969 but it tooks about 30 years till I got the first CD of you in this fucking Germany. I would be very happy, if I could hear you in a life concert. If its possible that you play in Germany anytime, it would be very great, when you give me an information about your concert-dates. Anyhow, I wish you good luck for the future and hope that you record more an more.
Yours sincerly

Mr.Martino I just wanted to congratulate you on your
signature series of guitars by Gibson. I couldn't think of
a more deserving player. Please come and play in upstate
New York if you can. There is a growing jazz movement here
and I know it would be appreciated by not only myself, but
the entire area. Your playing continues to be a driving
point in my aspiration to succeed as a musician. Thanks so
much for your music.

Dear Pat and Wedboard,
I've been a fan since 1976. I've read your minor conversion theory books . Fascinating approach. It's hard for me though to convert everything I see to "minor" . I can't seem to get my mind out of the major harmonized scale. I guess I need more practice. Question is: I'm 39 and really starting to love pedal steel guitar. I understand Buddy Emmon's and you have played together.
I would be interested in your approach and thoughts regarding your approach relative to a pedal steel player. i.e. does Buddy use an alternate tuning, does he influence your playing etc.
Thanks,
S.R.

I understand there's little to no response in the NGs
regarding Pat's Seven Sketches CD which I loved instantly.
Nothing for the jazz purist, of course. I particularly
liked the unashamed late-romantic style of 'Majesty', which
clearly asks for the full flesh of the symphony orchestra.
Best to you all, Udo

Dear Mr. Martino: Thank you for continuing to innovate and make the wonderful music and art that you do in a world that seems to value both as market campaigns and not expressions. I would like to call your attention to a wonderful summer festival held up here in Burlington, Vermont every 2nd week of June known as the "Discover Jazz Festival." It's a terrific festival set in a beautiful city surrounded by natural beauty. The audiences are eager and enthusiastic. It would be wonderful to see you play up here. Mr. Scofield has played it, so maybe you could ask him about it. Hope to see you here.

dear Pat,I am in the process of writing a dissertation for my degree on your contribution to the jazz guitar. This will include an evaluation of your Minor Conversion Concept in regards to the teaching of jazz guitar .I have been in touch with Jorge Heuser in Germany and have obtained his excellent transcriptions of your work and parts of his thesis . There are some questions I have which I would like to put to you so I

What ever happened to your Kunz(?) hollow bodies from the 70's? We met a long time ago in Seattle, at an REH Publication seminar. Your comments on creativity and Wes Montgomery were timeless. Do you plan to come out and play at Jazz Alley? The last time you played here was at the Bank Restuarant. I would like to send you a sample of my work. If you are uncertain about it just ask Don, Ron, Les, or Joe. Hope to hear from You.

I just visited your site. While viewing the photos I noticed one with Lenny (Breau). The date given informed my memory of a special night when Lenny & I met you at the Exit In. As I viewed the photo I realized that this was actually taken that night. Then was intrigued when, upon enlarging it, I found that you sat with Lenny in front of a mirror. Sitting with guitar, you were speaking with someone not at first seen. Then, in the mirror....my reflection. Such a strange discovery that I felt compelled to write. Now I well remember that night. Lenny was my friend, like family (almost my father-in-law, in fact)& I miss him today. Now, today I think of you & wish you all good fortune. Stephen
