Pat's Guest Book archive, November, 1997.

I was at a seminar that you gave in Seattle in 1978. We hung out for awhile after words and talked guitar. This was and is a pivitol point in my life. You had some wise words of wisdom for me "Do not end up like me. I have spent my whole life locked up in a room practicing and thinking." Needless to say, I have spent much of my life digging in and discovering many things of amazment, not only of music but my of myself as well. When we look at music as a mirror we see ourselves in that mirror. the music we create reflects ourselves as we are at the moment of creation. That creation, at least to me, is a gift from God. I cannot imagine having lived my life any other way but to have been a musician. During that seminar you gave out some things on interval lic dispersment that I have been working with for years. That hand out inspired my own thoughts in this direction. In my study of computer science I found a "like" sound that emerged in my consiousness. What I thought when I thought of music merged with t he thoughts of computer science. The sounds that I hear when I research knowledge of any sort is the same. All knowledge leads to all. Love all because love conquers all. Will it and it will be. All knowledge points to an all knowing all seeing being. Thank you Thomas McElroy

Pat or Pat cohort: it is imperative for music history that your tune "outrider" be recorded pretty much the way you and your quartet from the catalina club in hollywood played it last weekend. when mr. ridl would play the main bass riff, the band would do something harmonic i've never heard before and would be ecstatic to have on CD. second and last thought: the changes in "noshfurutu" (i know i'm misspelling it), the first number on "The Maker," are a harmonic progression i've likewise never heard the likes of before, and has likewise given me reason to keep living.

Pat. I have been studying your music for years and would like to know if I could study guitar with you. Your voice has become a part of my own musical consciousness. The books and tapes have helped me immeasurably but I have come to the juncture whe re I feel I need to study with a master who could provide some sequence and structure to my random approach to your musical ideas. It would be an honor to work with you-- a consumation of my musical career and creative endeavors. Both my brother(who pla ys Hammond) and I have been influnced by your creative force for years. I thank you for the inspiration and guidance. Please let me know if you are interested in working with me as a teacher.

Pat, I've been enjoying your music for some 20+ years. Yours is a story of the triumph of the human spirit over great adversity, and it's heard in every note. It would be a wonderful thing if you would ever play D.C., where we recently lost our only ja zz station and the owner of our most prolific jazz club, One Step Down. If you're interested in playing here, let me know, and I'll put you in touch with some club owners. P.S. The Fire Dance CD w/ Zakir, et. al., is incredibly beautiful. I plan on gi ving a copy of it to John McLaughlin when I see him tomorrow night. Peter Watkins

HI Pat! My name is Justin and I am a fifteen year old self-taught guitarist and I am one of few kids my age who is very interested in jazz. I only own one song of yours on tape, "The Great Strain", and I listen to it constantly. I am planning on buying more of your music soon! Most importantly I am seeking advice on how and what to focus on. I asked guitarist David Yamasaki,he plays with the Basie orchestra, at a "close up" clinic about tips on building melodic lines over changes and he told me to chec k you out. So I went online and found your sight. I'v been playing for four years. Maybe you can E-mail me some tips, anything that comes to mind, if you even have the time! Oh yeah my brother Ian,a bass player, plays in a band with one of your former stud ents Ian Sher. They're called The Heavies and play a lot in Santa Rosa. Anyway, if you can send me some lessons please do! I'd love to learn from a professional.

Hello Pat, I can't tell you how wonderful an impact you and your great work has had on my life and my view of the Nature of reality. I remember clearly back in 1984, having listened to your recordings on Muse for a year or so, I was so pleased to come meet you one day when my then guitar teacher and friend Anthony Curtis brought me up on one of his visits to your house and you showed me your studio and played a little sample of your latest composition on the computer. I was on cloud nine! We saw you play with Max in NJ on another visit. Inspired to spread the word, I spent two years financing and promoting Anthony's, " Variations On the Theme of Being," which was heavily influenced by your associaatiion with Anthony. Do you know that he and Joan g ot married a couple of years ago here in Richmond. They're doing well. Remember Bill Andraczek. He loves your playing, Pat. I would love to see you soon. I'll llook forward to it. I would love to talk to you if you'd like to. You are in my heart, my t houghts and my wishes. All The Best, Jeff

Hi Pat - Are you still married to Gerri. We had dinner together at my club, e.j.'s, in Atlanta GA circa 1975. A memorable occasion for sure. And whatever happened to Eric Kloss? or Bob DeVere? I booked Lyle Mays through him. Gil Goldstein played my pla ce several times. I love the album you did with him playing Rhodes "We'll Be Together Again". Dr. Gil has gone on to make quite a name for himself as did Lyly Mays. I always wanted to present you - we came close a few times, but, as I recall you were deal ing with some serious health issues at that time. Thank God you're back and better than ever. Still wish I could present you, but, alas, e.j.'s went the way of most great jazz rooms in 1982. Maybe someday we'll be together again. Thanks for all the great music in between. hey Pat, greetings from north carolina! this is a very tardy note to tell you how much bernie petteway and myself enjoyed showing you around chapel hill in january....and of course, the band, and your playing, was mind-blowing; you're a never-ending source of joy and inspiration to us both. i always wanted to take lessons from you, and that's what those two days in january were for me. are you a married man now? i've rarely seen as sweet a love as we saw in january, and i have some lovely photos to mail to you. hope to see you in the new year, either in philly, or chapel hill. warmest of all possible regards, danny gotham

Dear Pat, I have been listening to you since the early seventies. When I was studying at Berklee back then, I would listen to your records constantly. When I was living in a slum apartment, We'll be Together Again was always on my turtable and some nights it was what kept me sane. I have been playing for thirty years now and am consatantly amazed at the little Pat Martino references that keep cropping up in my playing. It's especially odd because I play blues and rock most of the time and almost no so called jazz anymore. The other odd thing is that at age 42, despite years of study, practice and playing I almost feel like I know nothing anymore. My playing keeps getting simpler. I remember thinking that on We'll be Together... that your playing was so simple, just the melody sometimes. Like Miles Davis. If I could just capture that Zen-like essence then nothing else needed to be said. Maybe that's where I'm headed. The journey continues.... Really thanks for the music, it's meant a lot to me. Pat, Thank you for showing me that a guitar player can have chops! Before I heard your recordings I couldn't care less about learning Jazz guitar. Your records inspire me to sit down with the guitar and attack it. I love all your recordings. I've been playing the guitar for five years, and I am a jazz guitar major at Western Connecticut State University. I wake up in the morning to your music and fall asleep at night to it. I love the strength and power in your improvising. I had never heard anything like it before. Thank you for all the wonderful recordings. Baiyina has got to be one of the best records I have ever heard in my entire life. Desperado is another one that I love. Your chops on the twelve string on Oleo kill me. Dear Pat: I'm very happy that you're well again, very happy indeed. Other things I'm excited about are: your latest recordings; your songbooks (now I know it was a D6/E in "Line Games"); your web site and this forum; and your gig at Yoshi's which I would have love d to attend, but couldn't. A well-placed spy told me you weren't feeling so great, but that the music was remarkable nonetheless. Now, since I've never met you personally, I'd like to tell you a few stories. As a preamble, I would only say that your mu sic has had a remarkable and positive influence on my life for a long, long time. I, too, had a life-threatening illness a few years ago, and my music (and your "influences," among others) played a major part in my recovery and need to create again. Tha nk you. Now, three short stories. (i) The first chord I ever "learned" in my dreams (asleep) was the Em6/9 in "Prelude." I include this because of the awakening effect that one event had on my playing. It was a kind of milestone in my musical life al though it would perhaps take too long to explain why. (ii) Tuck, my teacher/friend during the 70's and early 80's used to patiently critique my technique as I learned and played for him your solo pieces for recital preparation. I remember how we once s miled when we heard you bend a string - we knew that your string gauges were nothing if not thick. They were smiles of empathy to be sure. (iii) I had been out commercial fishing for a month in Alaska and had a beautiful new Gibson Johnny Smith waiting for me when I got back into port. I was in a bar a few days later playing one of your beautiful pieces, when this very drunken fellow - who obviously didn't like what he heard - grabbed my new guitar and smashed it to bits. What a bummer that was. Now, for the tag, I should like to again take advantage of your web site to wish you the very best. Fine thoughts of you. Love, Trevor.

Pat, I'm afraid I might fail trying to convey to you how much your music, and life; have inspired my music, and life. A few years ago I had a chance when we spoke (very briefly)over the phone. But, I think I got a bit tongue tied! I was attending Univ. of Maine At Augusta and became friends with a former student of yours, Peter. Word got out that I was going to do my Senior Paper on you, and Peter tried to help me out. You invited us down to Philly but, we were just two broke music students who could barely afford to get across town. Anyway, I often think that was my chance of a lifetime. Peter and I even wound up marrying two girls that grew up togather! However I moved west and lost touch with him. I'm so glad you finally getting the recognition you've deserved! "All Sides Now" is super! We longtime Pat Martino fans have anxiously awaited all these re-releases that are now coming out. Thank you for so Much, Rich Daigle PS Say hi to Pete if your still in touch!

(FINAL ENTRIES) ........ FU PING LEE: Fu Ping, thanks for all of the support that you've provided. As far as any of the upcoming dates, London has not been included as of yet. I would really love to perform not only in London, but other cities in the U.K. ....... If there is anything that could be done to bring these things about, it will be done as soon as possible and eventually we may cross paths! Until that happens I send you my best regards!
