Hey Pat, I just wanted to let you know that you have been a huge insperation and influence on me. I have been playing for about 5 or 6 years now and am studying with one of your old students, Mark Dzuiba. I was wondering if you are planning to perform, or do a clinic at The National Guitar Summer Workshop this summer in Connecticut. If you have time to e-mail me directly, my e-mial address is jazzman (at) bestweb.net Thank you for your time and dedication to your fans. -Later

Dear Mr.Martino; You never cease to astound me! I've been a fan for over 20 years, and I'm so relieved that you have triumphed against all odds and are now "back", as great as ever. I've never had the priviledge of seeing you perform live, but the "li ve (at) Ethel's" video is quickly on the verge of wearing out at my place. The concept of minor conversion has changed and "charged-up' my own guitar playing, I believe it to be the "holy grail" of improvisation. I wish you all the best in the world, as you are a true jazz icon, a national guitar treasure.

to PETER CATLIN: Dear Peter, it's a pleasure to "touch base" with you. I found your comment very interesting and I think that this informatin might be of help. I'm not sure whether you are aware of it but the Muse Records catalog was recently purcha sed by Joel Dorn for the new label: " 32 Records ". As usual, when ever something like this happens some of the most uncomfortable stages are the new release dates for all of the albums that are taken off the market under the original lable; in this ca se " Muse ". Recently I've noticed the availibility of " The Maker "; on Evidence Records as well as its Japanese imported version on Paddle Wheel Records, and of course all of the original Prestige albums; which are re-distributed by Fantasy Records. All of the others shall slowly begin to be re-released sometime around July or August. As far as the Warner Bros. albums; "Starbright" and "Joyous Lake" I have no idea if or when they might be re-released. But if you have no luck finding it I'd be happ y to send you a fairly good cassette copy of Joyous Lake. Send a note about this, including your address to: Joel Chriss Co,. Inc. / 300 Mercer Street, Suite 3J / New York, NY 10003 / USA. P.S. .... I hope to see you someday in the UK; maybe at Ronni e Scotts.

Dear Pat, great to read that you are very active both touring and also participating so fully with your own home page. I am a long time fan of your playing but sadly your music is never very well represented in record shops in the U.K. My personal favo urite album is Joyous Lake which has always been very special for me. I only have a very poorly recorded copy of it on an old cassette but it is almost permanently on my car stereo. I have been told that this album is no longer available in the U.K. Are the masters still available and if so, is there any chance that it will be re-released? If it really is no longer available can any of your fans help me out with a decent recording of it? Are there any plans for you to visit the U.K. in the foreseeable fu ture? Very best wishes to you.

Pat, After hearing a recording of yours a couple of years ago (I believe it was "El Hombre") you inspired me to start studying jazz guitar again. Since then i've scoured all the record stores for all your recordings that I can find. I think I have most of them including some that you are sideman in. I'm looking forward to your next release with Blue Note. I'm also delighted to see your songbooks of which I am ordering Volume I asap. Keep up the inspiring works. I'm thankful God has blessed you with more days to continue enriching us all. Look forward to you coming out to San Francisco area someday.

Everyone; Hi once again!,....... Since I ran out of time yesterday to complete responding to everyone who's entered this months guestbook; now is the perfect time to do so. #9: Mauricio Alfaro Espinoza, ..... Mauricio, I'm really looking forward to performing in South America sometime in the near future. Keep your eyes on the itinerary; when the time comes all of the dates as well as locations will apear there. Until th en I send my thanks. #10: Scott Gordon, ..... Scott, forgive me for my lack of retainment. Due to some of the problematic conditions generated by having a serious brain operation a few years back it's almost impossible to remember some of the moments that were extremely val uable; thanks for the reminder. As far as the use of "Scepter"; it never ended. Guitars are like individuals and each one of them has a magic power unlike any of the others; of course that also applies as well to some of the beautiful Parker guitars that I've been recently using. Today is Friday ( the 23rd ) and I'll be seeing Abe Rivera this Sunday; with a brand new single pickup ( DiMarzio ) solid body that he's just built for me. Both of us are very excited about this " new relationship ". Kee p your eyes and your ears open; I'm sure the outcome shall be extremely interesting! #11: Jorge Barnet, ..... Jorge, thanks for the hello!; I find that just as stimulating as the music that causes it to happen. As far as future REAL AUDIO interaction lets stay in touch; it seems to be in motion fast! #12: E. Shawn Qaissaunee, ..... Shawn, it's really a nice surprise to hear from you once again; especially in this format. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Until then I send you my best regards. #13: Art Silbar, ..... Art, I can't tell you how nice it is to be reminded about "Keystone Corner" in SanFrancisco! They were some really great moments; a great band that if I remember correctly included: Gil Goldstein; Anton Fig; Jeff Berlin; ( I'm not sure if Bob Hanlon was still with us at that time but was also part of the band for a while ) opposite Dave Liebmanns band!; ..... WOW!; ... some great memories; ..... Thanks! #14: Daniel Sanders, ..... Daniel, thanks for the support; I hope you understand how much I fully appreciate! #15: George Tucker, ..... Dear George, I reall hope that you've been enjoying "Songbook"; it makes me happy that Jack placed us in touch. #16: Larry Sr.; Vivian and Larry Jr., ..... I can't say how enjoyable it always is to hear from you! #17: Nick Pelkey, ..... Nick, it's great to hear from you. A greater view of the instrument always results in a greater view of life. Give my best regards to Elinor. .............. well everyone, I think that's about it. I look forward to the next time. Until then, I send you my best!

Hi Mario, It's great to hear from you; welcome to the May guest archive. Eric has been out of touch for a little while and as far as I know he's been deeply active in philosophy at a university in Pittsburgh PA. I'm sure that at some point in the f uture if Eric involves himself once again; being "active" as a performer, we'll certainly cross paths and at that time I'm sure that both of us would enjoy collaborating again. One more time; welcome to the guessbook and thanks for the support. < br> Pat Martino

Everyone; where should I begin?!....... I'm sure that you're all fully aware of how time consuming this can get; but since I'm not touring at this very moment I can see nothing more valuable than responding to your support. So what I'll do is I'll start with each of your comments and take advantage of the opportunity before too many comments begin to "stack up". #1: Brad Strickland, You know how I feel about you!;...... so does Ayako; she looks forward to all of us meeting when we finally cross paths once again. #2: Carlos Eduardo Pereira, When I'm coming to South America; ( Sao Paulo/Brazil ) is right now; at this very moment through your "tube"! That's what makes the internet as precious as it is and as far as your english: "Bravo"; I think it's adorable! As far as performing in Brazil; I'd love to. #3: Bob Deary, It's always surprising to hear from someone who's so close to home; having never met and finally meeting on the web; I always find it amazing! I also sometimes wonder how Wes or 'Trane would have felt with these same opportunities at t heir fingertips. Most likely they would have used it less; since it seems they had more work in those years than we do in these! As far as any upcoming performance in the Philadelphia area; the closest will take place at the Blue Note in New York City on June 17th; which by the way Philly' is so close that it's really nothing but a suburb. Good luck with the CDs as well as the vinyls...... most of all : THANKS for caring! #4: Rodolpho Sanchez, Thanks for tuning in to my web site and as far as Mexico; I hope when I do come through we have the opportunity to meet. #5: David Jeffrey, Both me and my wife were really surprised at your response to my signature; as well as your compliment ( "umai" ). That particular form of calligraphy is totally personal; although it was initially generated through my interest in S emetics as an ancient alphabet. I will look forward to a possible exhibit if the opportunity arrises, and from we to you: "Arigatou". #6: Mike Kissel, Thanks for the hello; as far as Bob Hanlon, we've been out of touch since the 70's. Maybe this will cause us to cross paths again. But if it does'nt and you happen to see him before I do please give him all of my best. #7: John Riemer,.... John, I've been endorsing GHS for about a year now. I've been using them since the 60's and they provide me with my own special gauges which at the moment are: 15, 17, 24, 32, 42, 52. They're normally : 16, 18, 26, 36, 48, 58; but it's more compatible at the lighter gauge when used with a special Parker Guitar at times. As far as the Ebony picks; ...... that really brings back memories! ..... Thanks! #8: Clay Moore, ... Clay, Please forgive me for my lack of memory at times; but I think that was over twenty years ago! It's great to touch base once again! As far as the session that was just completed; it's called " Firedance " and I'm super excit ed in sharing those special moments with the world! It was brought about by Peter Block and Sita Chetayar; (as well as a few others I'm sure) and resulted in a fabulous array of virtuosity on the part of everyone involved. It will be released sometime in June or July on Mythos Records and I'd love to hear what you think about it; but the mean time, please feel free to send an "audiograph" of yours to the same address that you came to the last time; I'd be happy to hear what your doing. To everyone else; .......... at the moment I've got to run; so let me just say THANKS! You'll never know how much it means to me to receive so much support from all of you who care. I'll see you soon.

Mr. Martino, It's an pleasure to get this chance to let you know how much I've enjoyed your art. I work for a local cd store here in the Phila. area and I've been trying to get my store to carry as much of your music as possible. I have been trying to find as many of your musical creations as possible on cd or vinyl. I'm a guitarist of sorts myself, and in your music I find inspiration as well as beauty. When/if will you be playing in the Philly area? I would love to have the chance to hear you live. It must have been enlightening for you to have played with and talked to people like Coltrane and Montgomery, let alone having heard them play live. I don't want to take up any more of your time. Good Luck, and Good Life.

Dear Pat, I was struck by the authority of your brushwork on the opening page of your website. Fantastic! ("umai") Are you studying Chinese/Japanese calligraphy? There is one script, very cursive and flowing, called, "grass style," if memory serves, that I think you would be great at, eventually. Perhaps it's the closest parallel to your uptempo phrasing. The great thing about the Way of the Brush is that there is always a style that resonates with individual moods and intentions. (By all means, please visit a calligraphy exhibit during your next visit to Japan!) For your art and perseverance, I say a heartfelt "Thank You." 'Looking forward to more of your solo performances. Respectfully, DJ P.S. I'd love to hear about your experiences with Sun Ra.

Hi Pat, I studied with you some at your parent's house in the '70s, and I have tried to contact you a couple of times since. Thank goodness for the digital revolution! I'm delighted that you are back in the saddle and busy with creative projects. You have served as an inspiration to an entire generation of guitarists and jazz musicians, and you continue to delight and amaze. I'm excited to hear about your colaboration with the tabla player and other Indian (presumably) musicians; I have recently begun recording w ith a tabla player myself. I would love to send you a recording of my recent work if you are interested. Sincerely, Clay Moore

Dear Pat, I heard you play at Fat Tuesday's in Manhattan in about 1987 (or was it 88? - It was your comeback concert). It was just after I had started learning jazz guitar, and I sat there amazed and astounded by your playing. It was THE event that set me on the road to an obsession with music. 10 years later i'm still as moved by your music, even thougn I understand a bit more of what goes into it now. My favorites: Consciousness, East and Strings.. Thanks, Daniel.

Dear Tim, not only as a response to your comments in this " guestbook " but also as a needed response from myself to everyone, who have not only looked forward to my upcoming tour of Japan, but also for those who have literally purchased tickets for some of the concerts in various cities that were scheduled accordingly. In 1995 the same series of events took place, and just like this time, many people were under the impression that I was ill. That particular tour became re-scheduled, and led to an extremely sucessful series of events in Japan; including meeting for the first time the wonderful lady that I've eventually married. This time, due to serious problems the entire tour has once again been postponed; generated solely by certain Japanese promoters; who for some reason at the very last moment claimed to be " bankrupt ". With regard to the statement that you graciously shared; containing a general description saying that I was not feeling well; ( which came from the manager of one of the establishments scheduled for performance ) I must say this : I feel better now than I ever have, and although I am seriously dissappointed as well as financially injured like many others who've given their honest support, I intend to try even harder and continue to do so on the basis of honesty alone. As far as this particular tour itself, I'm sure that all of the purchased tickets shall eventually be re-scheduled in the near future; at which time I will truly look forward to coming in contact with yourself as well as many others. Until then I send everyone all of my best wishes and thanks!

I saw where you are going to come HERE (Yonago, Japan) to play at IMAZUYA and I couldn't believe it!! But then the manager told me you were not well. I hope it's nothing serious. Anyway, I have a gig in Osaka on that date (May 18). But I sure hope y ou can make it here and I will DEFINITELY not miss it. By the way, have you heard of J. Krishnamurti? He was an interesting lecturer who had very little memory of his past. But he saw it as an advantage since the past hinders seeing the present clearly. If you can get a hold of some of his stuff, I think y ou may enjoy it. If you want I can send you some. My son has become a fanatic pool player and this has worried me since he seems to neglect studies. But I see where you quit school in the tenth grade and pursued guitar. Maybe it's not such a bad thing for him to follow his heart. Of course he still ha s to study. Now the sun is shining. I MUST go out and be in it. Breathe easy.
