I would like to relate my recent experience of buying the new album "Live at Yoshi's". I was so excited to hear you did an organ trio album with Joey that I rushed to the record store after work and plopped down my money. I couldn't believe that Pat was in the popular section above where they put all the regular records at Tower. I listened to a little of it in my van, but hadn't eaten all day, so when I went into a local cafe I had to bring the cover to peruse the liner notes. The thing I was taken by was the length of the songs. Pat, great job! I’ll bet getting the record company to sign off on that was a real chore. Hopefully with the success of the album more people will get brave enough (and be able) to try what you did. Thanks a lot Pat. We love ya, man.

Live at Yoshi's is in my opinion one of the finest jazz guitar
albums ever. As a guitarist who has played for 37 of his 43 years
I truly appreciate this album from both the technical and aesthetic
mastery it contains. Pat, I am looking forward to FINALLY
meeting you in LA at Catalina's...
Thank you for your wisdom, inspiration, and music!!!

Pat, will see you soon in LA. How about having one of you music/life seminars for us in LA. I/we would like to see you again in that context.
This time I won't waste everyones time with "what scales over what chords" questions like I did as a kid in Cleveland Ohio in the 70's. Ha Haa.
That time I was so in awe of you that when we broke for lunch I stopped to say how much I dug your music/playing that my voice didn't work and all you heard was a raspy "M-M-Mr. M-M-Mar-t-i-n-o. Ha Haa.
You didn't brush me off or make light of my youthfull blunder, instead you were kind and gracious.
I was at the time dissapionted in my introduction in that it didn't seem to make the impression I was hoping to make.
I then realized that it seemed that I was the only person that tried to make that one on one connection with you and that it didn't matter that I was I kid from Cleveland with a Harmony guitar that was just beginning music/life, but that what's really important is heart and you made it seem that you also made that connection when you took the time to answer my questions that maybe the others were maybe afraid to ask or already knew.
But you were patient and you made it seem that nothing was unimportant and that the answer to all the questions lay within ourselves and that what more valid that being the hot guitarplayer from anywhere,U.S.A.
Anyway you took the time with each and everyone of us and stayed so long as to almost miss your gig at the "Agora" in Cleveland 20-30 miles away that night.
That was a great experience and I still tell the "raspy voice/butterflys in the stomach feeling" about meeting you .
Thanks ,Pat for being beautiful.
See Ya in the city of angels Aug. 7-12. P.S. please think about the seminar O.K?
It would be great for those that haven't had a chance to meet you as well as for those that have. William Jesset jessetjazz (at) hotmail.com

Pat,
Will you be giving a seminars in the Boston area anytime soon? I know you'll be here at the Regatta Bar in November and at ButterNut too, would is be possible to get a private lesson? I am willing to pay whatever you want. I'm currently taking private lessons from Bruce Bartlett (Berkley Professor who's studies under Scofield and Stern). You are my biggest jazz inspiration. If you have anytime available over here, it would make my life. Any case, you are a true inspiration.

Dear Eric (Haas), .... it was a real pleasure to find out that you've enjoyed "Live at Yoshi's"; especially since there is no saxaphone on that particular date. It's quite a compliment; ....... thanks! As to a word of advice, ....... I'm sure that you're fully aware of how important, as well as difficult it is to survive in this world. The music business is just another craft, and like all of the others, it contains lots of disappointment as well as endless fulfillment ............ (and even then, successful moments sometimes contain disappointing elements). Throughout everything that takes place in the process itself, we're always left with an internal question; ............ "Did I do the best I could have done?" The answer shall always produce Self Esteem, ..... or the lack of it; ....... That Is The Instrument! .......... not the guitar, not the saxaphone, or any of the others. It's the joy that takes place when you open your eyes each day and decide that everything will be done the best that you can. Frustration, ... that's a necessity for you to feel, as the source for gaining Patience, as well as other precious virtues. We're all extreme beginners and we'll never be too great to interupt the learning process; especially about ourselves! You will definitely find your own voice, not only on tenor saxaphone, but in many other ways and I hope throughout all of this you continue to be the gentleman that you are. All of my Best Wishes, ........ Pat.

Dear Engé, it's a pleasure to read your lovely comments. I send my thanks for the support you've given. Regarding your description of the duet album, its title is: "We'll Be Together Again". I'm featured on guitar and Gil Goldstein on electric piano. It was originally recorded on Muse Records in New York City around 1976. It's been reissued and is available on the following labels: 1998 on "32 Jazz" and 1999 on "SME / Japan". As mentioned at the bottom of "Discography" (in the left hand column of the menu) it should be available through CD Now and 32 Records; both found on the internet. I hope this has been of some help. Most of all, it's been a pleasure to take the time needed to share a moment with you and give you thanks for your support! All of my best wishes, ....... Pat.

Dear Mr. Martino, I am a guitar player, thank you for your jazz style. When I heard you for first time, I could not play my guitar for a week, it was when my teacher Steve Brown from the Ithaca School Music of New York gave me a copy of "We´ll be together again". I have been studying the style for more than ten years and I have no words to discribe your style, just saying, THANK YOU FOR YOUR MUSIC, DON´T STOP.

Pat,
I'd like to thank you for your music, let me explain. Once I got into jazz, I became sick of all the conceited guitarists of the music world. They just bragged on about their pentatonic licks or their detuned guitars. They have no appreciation for music, they can't even read music. I wanted to switch to a more stereotypical jazz instrument out of the frustration of my guitarist peers. Instead I found your music. I had never heard jazz guitar like yours, it is on another level where you are not a guitarist but a musician, a jazz musician.
I am 16 and have been studying music for the past six years and jazz guitar for the past year. Six months ago I started my own little trio and we play at all the resturants arond the area. Thanks for the music.
Keep on swingin'

Something else I've noticed about Pat's playing on Live At Yoshi's. Pat does this thing in some of his solos where he repeats the same small riff over and over again like he's winding something up and then there is this incredible release where the music just flies. Kind of like shifting into 5th gear after wrapping out 4th for a few extra minutes. Listen to the solos on Oleo and All Blues for instance. Very cool effect. Reminds me of when I was a kid and had those balsa wood rubberband gliders. You wind up the propellar and when it's really tight you let it go and it just sails! I don't usually hear this technique in his studio stuff. Love it all!
Any Arizona fans out there intested in traveling to LA with me in August to see Pat?

Folks, I am still playing the heck out of Live At Yoshi's. Someone below said "Burnin'" This is the most Burnin' CD my ears have ever heard.
However, there is one moment on this CD that approaches, perhaps attains or becomes perfection. The transition from Joey's solo back to Pat (those first five notes he plays) on Welcome To A Prayer is simply breathtaking, a manifestation of the Divine (no pun intended) and I mean that seriously.
This disc continues to blow me away. There is much to discover here.
