Do you have a snail-mail fan-mail address? I drove to New York to see
your Saturday night show at the Blue Note. Hope to catch your quartet
again someday. This is my first spacewalk in cyberspace, and it's all
your fault. I'm afraid to look down. Actually this is being entered at a
cyber-cafe in the basement of Fred's Bread and Bagels, because my home is
computer-free. Now I'll shut up until next time. God bless.

There are many wonderful musicians (guitarists) on earth, but your
music speaks to me in a spiritual language. Your playing always serves as
a place of peace when I need it, and a vehicle of good, clean fun when the
mood strikes. Thank your creator for letting you continue and move to new
levels of communication. Hope to see you in the near future if you come
out to play in Los Angeles.

Greatings!!!
Although I have never met you in person, you have been
a great teacher\mentor to me.Your guitar philosophies and
ideas/veiwpoints have always intrigued me. Like the altering
of the dim.7th into a dom7th by moving any note a half-step
and reaching all 12 keys within a 3-fret radius. This opened
many doors for me. Also your idea about being ambidextrous
with one's fingerings by being able to play anything in
every position with any fingering (2nd nature I might add).
Also I think your "6 guitar strings veiwed as Hexagrams"
is incredible!(and I have even found a great use for it)
But this brings us to a different insight on "the mechanism
known as the guitar" An insight that shows how the number
"5" relates to the guitar in it's standard tuning.
It begins with what I call the 5 master chords. That being
open E,A,C,D,and G major chords (1st pos.) The next step is
the use of these chord figures up the neck via barre chord
(and yes the C,D and G style figures also using the index
finger where the nut would be on the open chord).
From this point one may realize how to "ALTER" the 5
master chords by changing the 3rd / 5th a half-step and/or
adding (subtracting?) the 7th,9th,13th ect. getting as deep
into chord chemistery as one wishes to go. By learning all
the inversions in all positions on the guitar mechanism,
along with their corisponding arpeggios/scales (having a
2nd nature awareness of a keys roots/5ths ect.)
"NOW!!!" by using your "I Ching veiwed as a guitar":-)
veiwpoint, a guitar playing enity can create a most
deversifing "progession set" of chord/arpeggeo qualities.
(Anyway,if this made any sense) this is just a small sample
of how you have illuminated my being and it's use of a
guitar know as a mechanism :-)
Blessings and Health,
Robb Whitman

Dear Pat, I am elated to have found this site. You won't remember me,
but you and I sat in a small club in Atlanta listening to a guitarist
named Karl Ratzer from Austria, way back when you were touring the Joyous
Lake albulm. You were kind enough to spend time with me and what you told
me that night shaped my musical mind for the rest of my life.
Unfortunately, I don't play much anymore, but I can still sing many of
your solos in my head. I can't tell you what a joy and inspiration you

Dear Pat,
I have been listening to your music since approx. 1968, and I still
can't get enough of it. I especially remember the early things with Jack
McDuff, Trudy Pitts, and Eric Kloss. I recently purchased Nightwings and
The Maker and I am looking forward t
o getting All Sides Now. I have never seen you play live, but God
willing, I hope to see you at Birdland in October. I purchased your two
Creative Forces video's and especially enjoyed your comments on your new
attitude on life since the recovery of your
illness. I can't believe that I am writing to you. There is so much that
I would like to say only I don't quite know how to say it.
Although I listen to all of the jazz guitar players and am
particularly fond of the organ bag. Wes Montgomery and you are truly my
favorite guitar players for I consider you both to be Prophets of my
generation. How blessed I am to have lived in this
era.
May God Bless you; Keep you in His Infinite Wisdom; and Through His
Son, Grant you All you Desire in Life!

Dear Pat, I wanted to mention how much your music has done for
my soul ... it speaks to me like few others. I'd also like
to say that it is a tremendous treat being able to sit down
with your videos and have you introduce your thinking in the
most caring of manners. Your gift has answered for me many
mysteries and mis-understandings regarding the use of
chromatic passing tones. Breaking through these difficulties
is something I never would have expected to pick up on my own
in my life time. You've granted me ecstatic experience in my
search for musical freedom, not to mention some ability to
add some Pat Martino flavor to my lines ... I can never thank
you enough for what you've given me; my love goes out to

Dear Pat,
Really enjoy your flawless runs--you never get stuck. My dad a
"Switch-hitter", right and left handed, guitar player turned me onto you
with the "Consciousness" album. The strings must have been smokin' on
that date. Dad, Paul Sr., tells me that you pl
ay with the heaviest gauge strings available because you pick so
powerfully. And I also heard a "tale" that you use all downstrokes. Is
that true... Or even possible? None the less, I've never heard cleaner or
more decisive note choices. I was also wo
ndering if you had ever had a chance to see live or play with Lenny Breau?
I think that would have really been something tasty to hear you both jam.
By the By, have you heard the "Living Room Tapes" with Breau and Brad
Terry the horn and, so it seems,
whistling afficianado? If not it's a must for anybody's collection.
Lastly, do you have any events in the Central or Southern California
areas. I know there are alot of guitarists here in "Buck's Hometown" that
are into heavier things than C&W. The invitation's forever open!

Pat,
What a wonderful surprise to come across your site on a guitar link page.
I saw you perform in the mid 70's in Toronto as the opening act for Jean
Luc Ponty with Bobby Rose, I beleive.
Unfortunately the audience was unruly and as I was a ways back in the
crowd I didn't hear you as well as I would have liked to.
Obviously it bothered you as you cut your set short and said something
about returning to Toronto with a rock and roll band.
Still my friends and I enjoyed it as we already were big fans of your
playing.
Today I am a 39 yr. old pro guitarist and although I play primarily rock
and r&b I still find that your playing has left a lasting influence on my
playing, particularily my rythmic phrasing.
Great to see you're back and I look forward to enjoying your recordings
both old and new for years to come.

to a great question, I have to be fully honest by saying ... I have no
idea; maybe that's because I've never transcribed; although I do vaguely
remember a time when I was forced
to play records so many times that I wore them out; in fact, .... if
anything, it wore me out even more! So much so that it caused me to begin
to perform music more as a player and leave the transcriptions up to
others who were more gifted with those p
articular blessings. I'm sorry that I can't offer a solution; but I do
think it might be helpful to direct that question toward a pro. in that
field. In the meantime, thanks for your comments.

Congratulations to you for your newly designed website! We briefly met

LPs (e.g. Jack McDuff, Groove Holmes) where you are sideman. I would love

I am working temporarily in Lancaster on a startup technology company and

Hi Pat,
I've been wanting to contact you over the years and to my delight
I have found you on the Internet. You probably don't recall but I
first met you in 1973 (I was graduating Berklee at the time) at the
Jazz Workshop. I remember it well, you opened up with The Great Stream.
We talked for a bit about a 12 string electric that I had just purchased,
having been blown away by your Desperado recording (I wanted to be
Pat Martino). I met you again in Newport, Larry Coryell was supposed
to be playing but you and your group showed up instead, again to my
delight.
Well it's 24 years later and you are still my sole inspiration
for playing the guitar. Just when I think I can let go of the
instrument (I have since become consumed with a Computer Science
career) I will listen to one of your recordings and it helps
me put music in perspective as my true love of life second only
to my family. Speaking of, my three boys are all involved with
music and have grown up listening to Pat Martino recordings since
birth. Some of their favorite recordings are Starbright and
Joyous Lake which we can't seem to find on CD at the moment.
We have just about everything else on CD (We'll be Together is another
we can't find). If I had to pick a favorite it would be "Consciousness",
oh wait, "Live", no ah "Exit", I guess there all my favorite.
I'm glad to hear that your health is better (it was devastating
to hear about your surgery). It certainly sounds like you are back.
One of my children was in a bad accident and lost his Piano memory
among other things. As you know, that really puts things in
perspective. I think it's called Love of Life. Well it has
been fun writing this e-mail to you (long over due)and I wish
you well.
God Bless you Pat. You are a great inspiration to me and my family.

others like yourself as far away as Israel. If you look into the June
archive, I think that youıll find it pleasing to share the feelings that
Ran Cohen ( from: Kiryat ono, Israel
) added to the guestbook; also that there may be the possibility of my
coming to Israel at some point in the future if all goes well. If and
when that does come about, Iıll look forward to meet. Until then I send
you my best wishes as well as my thanks
.

Hi Pat! I just wanted to thank you for the continuing inspiration that
your January visit to North Carolina provided to so many of us. It was an
honor to have the opportunity to interact with you for a couple of days
and a pleasure to meet Ayako. Congr
atulations on your marriage. I wish you much happiness and hope to see you
again in the near future. Diane and I send our love to both of you.

I love your playing! You have been such an inspiration to my guitar
playing. I've been playing for 25 years solid and can play the shit out of
most styles of music, but jazz is what I really love..You're newest CD is
killer and I still listen to Joyous
Lake all the time. I hope that you're feeling healthy these days. LOVE
YA!

Hi Mr. Martino.
I've got some of your tapes and books, and you can't
believe how much they helped my playing skills.
Here, In Israel, unfortunately, you and your music
are not so popular, but those who should know you,
sure do!
Proud to be your fan, and your "Student"...
