Everybody interested in Pats theoretical approach
towards the logic behind guitar and music in general,
and everybody who liked "Creative Force I and II" videos,
I would like you to take a lot at the book "Grundlagenharmonik"
by Werner Pöhlert ISBN 3921729300 which is also available in English
titled "basic harmony". Included in this book is a part called
basic tritonic, where you can find a lot more of this ideas discussed
and presented in a good way. You will also find "Pats approach" of
choosing the scales for improvising called "basic mediantic" here.
I am not affiliated in anyway with Mr. Pöhlert but got to love his
work after studying his ideas. He makes conscious what is done
unconscious by so many musicians when creating music.
I think his material is available in many libraries and I think
it is a jewel for everybody who really wants to know, what is
going on when something sounds great for us.

Pat - I was dismayed and disheartened to hear that you are ill.....I was enroute to the recent Birdland performance when I heard......I wrote you a letter some 10 years ago, and since then I've had the pleasure to get to know you a little bit, study and just throw back a few beers with you on a few occasions. Now I'm just one of the faces at the concerts that you probably vaguely remember, but your beautiful music has changed my life, and I hope that you recover quickly. There's absolutely no use to cigarettes, man. all my love and best wishes........Jim

Hey Pat,
Look forward to seeing you (at) Scullers next month.
I spoke to Bob Kobus the other day, I think he'll
probably make the Birdland show. Things have been
pretty hectic (as usual) up here, there's been very
little time for me to practice with my guitar. I'm
still teaching math at an inner-city public school,
but also took on a part-time position (adjunct-instructor)
teaching calculus at a school called Worcester Polytechnical
Institute. What with over 170 students, it's very
difficult to find time to learn inversions, scale-line
harmonies, substitutions, chord/approach tones, etc.
Kobus has been very helpful, though. He is a a very
good teacher and the fact that he's helping me is a
testament to his great patience! Anyway, look forward
to seeing you and Ayako soon.... Kindest Regards,
Bob La Vergne

It is very good news that joyus lake is going to be released on CD. We are a small group of Danish "exmusicians" now doctors, painters, post office workers etc. that has this as our favourite EVERYTHING album. My LP copy is worn down! Considering that it is from the innovative year of 1976 it is as good as Black Market by weather report and better than Mahavishnu and Return to forever.
Best wishes

For Shaun in Boston (and everyone else): some people said the same about John Coltrane. Sure, if you analyse Pat's lines, you'll find the same licks and bits and patterns over and over again, but if you analyse your own talking, you'll too find the same patterns etc over and over again. One way look at Pat's playing is: the man has evolved his own language, highly personal and immediately recognizeable.

I'm 18 and have only been playing guitar for a couple of years and just started to get into jazz and I think that your are awesome Pat! I saw your shows recently with Joyous Lake at the casinos in Atlantic City and at the Keswick in Philly and I thought that all of you were outstanding! I just started getting lessons from Joe Federico in South Jersey and I was wondering if you thought that he is a good teacher for someone my age. I was also wondering how long the both of you got lessons together when you were young . Thanks for putting out some of the best jazz albums!!!!

For Shaun In Boston: There really is no such thing as always
playing the same thing even if you are! Why! Because nothing
remains the same . . . . ever! Even if you feel that Pat is
doing nothing but playing the same things over & over with a
few modifications (as there are perameters/limits to all things
and paradoxically infinity/creativity as well), may I suggest
that the very environment you presently inhabit is
changing in this very moment. Your guitar excursions will
always do the same as well. It's all in how you "see" and what
you "hear" that is the determining issue. Good Luck To You!
Pat: Please come out to the San Franciso Bay Area and perform
again ASAP. We are all waiting to hear you perform again!!!

Pat has done great things on the guitar BUT, he has been playing the EXACT same thing for the last 20 years!!!! As musicians, we should be listening, but the majority of you don't listen enough to realize it's the same stuff. This 'God' like stature you have put on him should be rethought.....hey, it's 1999, think about that......

Love your Guitar Work.. I am also a guitarist...
Have you ever heard of the author Susan Bradley?
she is the author of the book "How To Be Irresistible to the Opposite Sex",
which is a How to book on dating and relating to the Opposite sex.
It is a very interesting book
She is also in the Process of writing a book, "God Makes House Calls".
I am a friend of hers and I told her about your amazing story of how
you retrained yourself how to play the guitar after your Aneurysm.
Please contact her yourself I am sure she would be interested in your remarkable story!
Her e-mail address is Lovinguniv (at) aol.com
I know that since you have devoted most of your life to your
music other facets of your life took a back seat...
especially your personal life.... Congratulations about your
new marriage ... I know my congratulations are a few years late.
I hope that you are totally happy... God bless you
My e-mail address is asilbar2 (at) yahoo.com
Unfortunately my friend Susan was turned off to jazz by a bad dating experience
some years ago....She likes George Benson but she is not fond of straight ahead jazz.
Please drop her a line and perhaps a sample CD ie "The Maker"
especially the 4th track was truly beautiful... I have been fan of yours since 1974
Susan Bradley's URL is www.lovingu.com. she lives in Cleveland Ohio. She was born there.
