Pat: I've dug your playing since day one. Dynamics man, dynamics! especially on the the way you phrase your ballades. If you're ever in the Cleveland, OH area I'd love to take a lesson and pick your brain, not that I'd actually get a grip on it, but man, I'd love to try. I've been playing for 30 some odd years, although i love jazz, unfortunately, I've been doin' the bill paying music, which I guess ain't too bad, but I'd love to sent in a direction that opens new things to the ole' thinking pattern. What the hell! if you never ask, you never receive. Al

Thank you for the diagrams and tables on the website. I have Pat Martino Creative Force Part 1 with CD. The new Guitar Player article sent me back to your teaching materials. I plan to get the new Nature of the Guitar. We met back around 1981 or so at a seminar you gave in Hartford CT at Creative Strings just after you were coming back from your medical problems. I teach guitar at Gerry's Music in South Hadley MA. I'll be using your materials with my students. Stay well.

I have been a fan of Pat Martino since I first spun LIVE ! back in the early 70's. Were there any additional tracks recorded for that album and is there the possiblility for a CD upgrade possibly with additional tracks of this mind blowing record?

Hi Mr. Martino, I'm so looking forward to seeing you at the First World Guitar Congress in Baltimore MD. Two of my greatest influences in jazz have been John Coltrane and yourself, I found it to be a great delight (and no suprise!) to have learned of the connection between the two of you. Thank you for your inspiriation and the blessing that is your music. Steve

Hi Mr Martino I'm a french jazz pianist, i'm 50 years old, and for the first time from a long long time i decided to go away from my bear cavern. I've seen (ear) you at "Le new Morning" in Paris last month with my wife. I told her : you know honey, This Is Pat Martino ! It's impossible to me i cannot run to listen this genius". I heard you for the first time in the seventies' and i always appreciate your drive. I know now you play better as never. Life is strange, and difficulties sometimes make us better and higher inside. I respect you for all your way of life. The fact i play piano will be a little strange to you, a guitar player, because i don't know if it's the same in USA, but in France there is a kind of war between piano and/against guitar. But exactly as you say, for me the piano is not so important. After your very strong and marvellous set in paris, i think the war is too expansive for our energy. You demonstrate what intelligence and love can be real and rich. Thank you again. Me and my wife (her name is Sylvie) we kiss you sincerly with great human fraternity. I hope to see you again, to listen to you again and again and again. Life must swing ! Yves

Pat-I saw you play back in the 70's at a club called The Pier in Raleigh NC doing mostly material from the "Joyous Lake" record and enjoyed your performance so much. The music was amazing- I especially remembered that you inroduced the song "Pyramidal Vision" and you and the band played with that terrifc fire-Romping with each other and Kenwood was dancing behind his kit almost. Thanks for a great memory!

Hello Pat! I see you have a return engagement booked at the Dakota here in the Twin Cities. Wait 'till you see their new club. They have moved to downtown Minneapolis and the new place is a jazz-lovers dream. The sight lines and acoustics are great. I caught Larry Coryell there last week and we could hear the acoustic sound of his guitar strings from the middle of the house. (the food is still good, too) the club already has your photo posted on their Nicolett Mall billboard. Just the way it should be! God bless and see you soon. Brian

Hi Pat, for what it's worth, I am not a musician (I don't count the atrocious way I play piano), just a humble music lover. I make my living as a copywriter, and I work in a noisy, creative atmosphere. Most of the time I don't mind the distractions of my co-workers chattering, but there are times when I need to filter out the noise. Recently I've taken to using a discman and a set of earphones. I usually just grab a handful of CDs from my husband's and my collection. A few weeks ago one of your CDs got into the mix ("Cream," it belongs to my husband). What a joy! So naturally I had to check out your website to see what's up with you. Well, you have an amazing story. I didn't know. Ok, that's it. I'm a fan. If you're ever playing in the NYC area, I'll definately check you out. For now, you're a wonderful distraction from a chaotic workplace. Thanks!

Hi Michael, ....... regarding your description on chord symmetry, I find it useful to construct (V7th, and altered V7th) mi7th substitutions on forms of this nature. On the pure G7th form; (without the flatted 5th) one of the most consonant substitutions is Dmi7th; (a perfect 5th higher than the root G). Therefore it can be seen to some degree that the perfect 5th represents consonance itself. By the same token, the Db7th form; (without the flatted 5th) also has a consonant mi7th substitution, a perfect 5th higher, that form is Abmi7th; (a mi2nd higher than the root G). From here it can be seen that the tritone substitution contains "both sides of the coin"; consonance and dissonance.
A great example would be seen in two forms in the same key:
(1). The G9th chord (with no root, and no 5th); = Dmi.
(2). The G7 (#5b9) chord; (with no root, and no 7th); = Abmi.
In the key of G, (1) = consonance (perfect 5th), while (2) = dissonance (mi 2nd); both are seen as One. The Dmi7th substitution for the G7th, G9th, G13th, etc., or an altered version. Example: Abmi7 for G7b5, G7#5, G7b9, G7#9, etc., etc..... Finally, as substitutions those two also multiply in Mi3rds. ...... for me that was a beginning.

Pat Martino

Hi Pat, regarding chord symmetry. You've pointed out that dim.7 repeat every minor 3rd, aug. triads repeat every Maj. 3rd. What about dom. 7 b5 chords which repeat every 6 frets. G7 b5 = its tritone sub. Db7 b5

Hi Pat, I really enjoy your two books. One omission though regarding chord symmetry. You mentioned that dim. chords repeat every minor 3rd, aug. repeat every Maj. 3rd. What dom. 7 b5 chords which repeat every 6 frets? I can see a G7b5 as a Db7b5.
