Pat, I've expanded on Hotline #6 in your "Jazz For Guitar" instructional book. The line is an ascending chromatic scale dispersed in octaves. I took the first 13 notes of the Hotline and repeated that pattern up the neck. It took me a couple of days, but I was also able to figure-out the pattern descending. What inspired myself to do this is that a friend of mine that plays bass guitar was playing a Frank Zappa album with keyboardist George Duke on it. The way George Duke solos reminded myself of Hotline #6. I've been hearing this line in my head for many years but I could never get it out onto the guitar until I studied Hotline #6. Thanks so much for writing this book for my single line soloing has never been better. I'm a student of the late Joe Pass and we all miss him very much.

Where have I been? I recently heard your recording "Fire Dance". I have been a big Larry Coryell and John McLaughlin fan and enjoy both traditional jazz, fusion and the excursion that these two masters have done with the music of India. I was very impressed with Fire Dance and began lsitening to some of your other recordings, Live At Yoshi's and now a reissue of Joyous Lake and Starbright. Seems like I have been missing out on some great guitar music for quite some time.

Dear Mr. Martino, I think I have some more things to ramble about, although I don't know if these entries are read by you. I have just read your theories about how the guitar relates to the I-Ching and geometry. It made me have a revelation about math in general, and how geometry is the only kind of math I am good at. It made me realize how much music relates to geometry, how spaces and shapes relate to each other, and space in general. I also realized that I am only into geometry and can understand it because I love playing music. It made me kind of theorize about how everything in nature is actually very geometrical and mathematical (ie. flower petals, seeds) and how guitar is such a part of nature in that way. It is overwhelmingly beautiful how the guitar is constructed out of wood (from trees), very carefully measured, and fitted with strings from metal ore in the ground. Then it is electrified with energy which comes from a power plant, which gets its electricity from forces of nature like wind or water. Then, when the guitarist plays it, the instrument is truly complete, in the sense that humans like the guitarist "comes from the ground" much like the guitar. Well, that is my thought on some random things, if anyone cares! I know you are very busy, but if you ever read this, could you please write back? I just think it would do so much for my gutiar playing, and also maybe so I could ask you a few simple questions. Thanks!

Hi, my name is Jessica and I (try to)play jazz guitar. I am 14 years old. I started playing a year ago and have started getting into jazz this fall, and your record, 'El Hombre,' among records by Wes Montgomery and Charlie Christian, has inspired me to take up jazz guitar. Also, watching you and other musicians play on 'Studio Jams' on the BET Jazz Channel has encouraged me. This genre is so much more fulfilling than rock or blues, and I feel like I am actually learning. Thank you so much for being an inspiration. I am really looking forward to seeing you play live in January at the Iridium! Well, if I can go. This will be my first live music experience ever if you don't count Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, camp, et cetera! Also, I am really forward to seeing your clinic at the Union Square Guitar Center also in January. I definitely hope to go to one or another. Thanks for such a great site and music! This might seem like a rather silly question because everyone knows you are very busy, but do you give lessons or ever plan to?

Thank you Pat, I too was at one of the Jazz Alley performances. I purchased the Think Tank album there and have really enjoyed it. It really is Coltrane and modern "Be-Bop" inspired and I find it personally and professionally inspirational. Fellow Martino fans, if you don't don't own this album you must get it Immediately! Pat, please make Seattle a regular stop! I would enjoy making arrangements for a guitar lesson if possible. Thanks again, Rolf Johnson

My name is Sara..I am 17 years old and had never been to a real jazz performance until I saw you at Jazz Alley. I don't know if you remember meeting my dad and I, but it was one of the best "bonding" we have ever had. I want to thank you for inspiring my dad to get back into his guitar playing. He is currently playing a 1971 Gibson L5 CES and an 1981 Ibanez George Benson model. Now he is looking everywhere possible to find a good source for a Pat Martino Custom Gibson. So thank you again and we really enjoyed your show!! Please respond if you have time.

Peace + Blessings Pat, I grew up as a huge fan of your music from my teenage years(during the Joyous Lake album) to your latest release, Think Tank. I am speechless in trying to describe the joy I experienced listening to Think Tank. Your playing on Think Tank surpassed pre-existing great expectations I had regarding your level of musicianship, spirituality, and the sound of the ensemble as a whole. I wish you continued peace and endless blessings. Your fellow Virgo, Kwame Coston
