Pat's Guest Book archive, December, 1999.
My very best to you and your family over the holidays. I'm an extra large fan and much influenced by your work. This is a sort of technical question about a tune. Don't know if you
ever deal with stuff like this but I thought I'd give it a
shot. I'm wondering if the intro to Uptown Down in your issue of Jazz Improv mag. is written correctly. I'm speaking of the 4th through the 8th bar. If it is, then the
obvious (sounding) phrasing would be off by an eighth note
starting on the 2nd beat of the 4th bar. Or perhaps you
just wrote it that way. I imagine you've been asked about
this but I was interested in playing it correctly with my
quintet. Don't mean to be impersonal with this. I've got a
LOT of your tunes in my book. I really do wish you the best
and if you don't get around to answering this, I understand.
Thanks much. Rich Walker

Pat,
I'm a Classical guitarist majoring in performance at DePaul Univ. Chicago IL. Even though we come from different schools of thought I would like to tell you that you have made a huge impact on my musical training. I have all of your albums and would love to see you play live. For the past two years I have been also taking Jazz lessons along with my arduous classical training. You have changed my life and that of my cohorts at school. Much love, and keep practicing!

Dear Pat,
I'm a jazz guitar player from faraway. From Greece. To bad you 've never visited it. I grown up as a guitarist listening to your music from your early years. I believe that you 're a great influence to every guitarist. Maybe even you, don't realize what a big influence you're to the guitar world.Your way of thinking for soloing in your videos is realy something different and simple. To me your ultimate solo is on "Sunny" and your greatest album is "We'll be together again". I think you should do another guitar and organ album.Just the two of them. It adds to your style because the guitar goes in front and you're a player to be in fornt. I hope I'll have the opportunity some day to see you, listen to you, and talk to you alive.
Actually this is one of my dreams. If you want to visit Greece for any reason (concert, seminar, vacation)feel free to get in touch with me.Any time you 're wellcome.Just E-mail to me.
Best wishes
CHRIS

Pat- I am a 24 year-old guitarist who recently discovered you about 2 years ago. I am good friends wiht Paul Bagin's niece and one day when I stopped by she was playing "The Return". Immediately I was floored. Since then I have been a huge fan and wanted to let you know that First Light, Head & Heart, and Comin' and Goin' are incredible releases. You are one of the greatest inspirations in my life and I embrace your work dearly. I have only seen you live once with Sco at the Blue Note, and you haven't lost the touch. God Bless you this Holiday season and stay healthy.

Dear Pat: I'm glad to know you are in good health; for many years I studied the guitar without understanding the instrument itself; then, in 1974 a friend told me about you; I was completely hypnotised by your guitar playing; then came your books, and the truly brilliant explanations about the guitar, music and being genuine; no other guitar method that I came across goes so clearly and directly to the heart of the subject; I would like to espress my deepest gratitude for all the knowledge you gave so freely and spontaneously; I send you my warmest wishes of prosperity, health and love

Hey Brother,
Just thought I'd drop in and say hi to two of my favorite people. Can we please get together over the holidays and break some bread ? Also, an Italian jazz magazine asked me to ask you if you would care to write an article for their publication. I promised that I would at least ask.

Hi, Pat and Joe,
Your guestbook is fascinating to read... I love all these guys who get in touch with you...
I see there is at last a European tour planned for 2000. How wonderful. I'm very thrilled. The jazz correspondent of our London evening newspaper (a PM fan, of course) told me that you were booked to do the London Jazz Cafe this summer but it didn't happen? Is that true? What happened there? This sort of thing doesn't seem unusual for the Jazz Cafe... Clara Moreno and Airto were both billed then cancelled (what's going on there?).
Joe, can I call soon you to find out more about Pat's dates? Or you can e-mail me, if you have time, and we can talk. I'm doing some writing for some British jazz magazines. Maybe we can do a story? How's London looking on that itinerary?
Some very interesting Japanese import Pat Martino albums have recently found their way into the racks of Tower Records here. Just too tempting...
Looking forward, too, to the new Eric Alexander album (love him on the Stone Blue album -- the track 'With All The People' is my favourite). When's his new album coming out? If you can let me know, I'll do some gentle 'suggesting' to those who are on our side at JazzFM, the radio station. Maybe we can tie it in with news of the dates for 2000. We need to talk.
Talk to ya soon.
much love, to you both...
Chrissie xXx
ps Baden Powell live in London (one night only at Ronnie's) last month was just AWESOME! Wow! Hardly any pre-publicity but there was standing room only... We get so few visiting guitarists here. Ralph Towner has just been through, but didn't play London! Only Manchester and Brighton, for some reason. Oh, we've had Peter White -- last month... No offence to PW, he's great, but... Yeah, The Wave is washing over London, too. Please, come and rescue us with your heart-stopping, thought-provoking music! Yeah! Alvin Youngblood Hart was here for the recent London Jazz Festival... he was amazing!
Our own fabulous Jim Mullen is at Ronnie's all next week. That'll be fantastic. You heard him? Terrific! And Carl Orr is a nice guitarist -- he's Australian but based here... works with Billy Cobham's band a lot.

Hi Mr. Martino, I'm a Great Fan of your style of playing Guitar. The first time I heard only 2 pieces of you (Oleo and ??). I recorded it on a Tape in 1969 but it tooks about 30 years till I got the first CD of you in this fucking Germany. I would be very happy, if I could hear you in a life concert. If its possible that you play in Germany anytime, it would be very great, when you give me an information about your concert-dates. Anyhow, I wish you good luck for the future and hope that you record more an more.
Yours sincerly
