You're performance of 'DO YOU HAVE A NAME' on the video 'Legends of Guitar Jazz 3 (Vestapol 13043)' is one of the highlights of the tape. And that's no mean task, considering Tal Farlow, Tommy Flanagan and Red Mitchell play a burning rendition of 'Fascinating Rhythm. Saw your show at the Fairmont Hotel, SF, back in '96. When do you return to San Francisco? I collect memorabilia of guitar players that I admire. I would like to obtain a pick and a sighned 8x10 photo of yours. Please contact me at
jzgtr57 (at) aol.com to let me know if this would be possible. So glad you're healthy and playing better than ever. Happy New Year

My friend Tsuyoshi and I are guitar enthusiasts/students who are big fans of your music. We are studying jazz music. I'm currently studying at the Southern California Conservatory of Music with Richard Taesche. We meet every Wednesday to play jazz mu
sic. I'm currently struggling to learn how to play chord melodies. I've taken a lesson with Ted Greene.

Hi Mr. Martino. Just a quick hello from an old fan. I was listening to one of your instructional videos last night and at one point in the tape you started playing these incredible intervalic leaps that sounded so captivating i had to keep rewinding th
e tape to listen over and over again. I have, i think, all of your recordings and instructional material. I am a forever fan. Keep the music coming. Thanks for everything.

Sorry to keep bothering you about
when you are coming to Japan again.
(Or did you already answer?) I haven't

I think Jimi Hendrix (see below) meant
that as a compliment although knowing
Hendrix he would have probably phrased
it "Man, who is this outta sight cat!"

Dear Mr.Martino: Where I live ( approx. 30 miles north of Tampa, Fl ) is hardly a jazz oasis- I had to order your latest, BOTH SIDES NOW, and CREAM-- I work in Nuclear Medicine, a form of diagnostic Imaging-- we do many patients a day, and they have to
lay inside cameras while pictures are made of cardiac, glandular conditions, etc.- I often play music for these folks. A favorite for a long time has been THE MAKER, and now it is both CREAM and BOTH SIDES NOW. All the patients ( and this is a diverse ag
e group ) like the music. I personally believe they find it appealing, because, it IS TRUE ART, and the passion, warmth and virtuoso performances of your truly phenomenal guitar make listening to these recordings a joy each and every time they are heard.
I myself, an ardent fan of yours for over 20 years, I'm still awestruck at the fantastic music! My only hope that someday you will be appearing somewhere down this way. May you have a great holiday season, and god bless you and yours. The rest of us have
already been blessed by the all the music you have given us. Thank you so much just for being!

I remember reading a magazine article a while back in which you were talking about 'step time' vs. 'real time' and was wondering if you could elaborate a little on these terms. Your thought was that Wes's music hipped you to 'real time'; I can see tha
t, but where were you before that?
I was very honoured to attend a seminar you did at Duquesne University a couple of summers ago and while I've been playing jazz for about twenty years, I find your 'minor' approach nothing short of a revelation that has really changed my approach to impro
visation. Your spirit of sharing is/was truly appreciated. As stated in a previous note, hope to hear you in Canada one of these months.

Dear Pat,
I've been out of touch with your recordings for several
years now, but, with the computer age, I can keep up
with what's going on now.
My first concern is that I'd like to obtain a copy of
We'll be together again", on CD but it looks like it's not
available. Is that correct? That has got to be one of my
all time favorites of all the guitar players I have on record.
Gil Goldstein lays back behind your playing beutifully.
I saw you in the late 70's at the Smiling Dog Saloon on
W.25th St in Cleveland , Oh. It was great!
I hope you get this message. I've been playing jazz
guitar since 1973 for your info. Thanks

Pat, I like the web page very much. I would appreciate, as I'm sure other musicians would, details about how you apply "The Nature of Guitar" when performing, especially improvising. I also want to thank you for your generosity and great advice when I
was struggling as a guitarist. We met in 1976 at a gig your quartet did in Raleigh, NC. You spent much of your break speaking with and encouraging me, and I'll always appreciate that! I remember your saying, "Remember you always have an alternative" when
making decisions. As a full time guitar teacher, writer and performer, I've shared that with others I've counseled. It was and is great advice. Thanks again, Pat!

Let me wish Pat, and all the Pat fans a happy holiday season. You probably all know that Pat has a song on BlueNote's Christmas album. You may have to do some searching, though, to find the album (only on vinyl) by Don Patterson named "Holiday Soul".
It is a trio outing with Don on B3, Pat on guitar, and one of my favorite organ band drummers, Billy James. Pat's playing on this album is great. It is my favorite XMAS album of all time!! Try to find it.

I recently ran across a menu from my former jazz supper club, e.j.'s, in Atlanta. The back of the menu contains the quote off of your "we'll be together again" album which begins "True Music, like all true Art, is an experience to be shared, not judged
, for praise cannot make it better, as blame cannot make it worse." Life being the ultimate "art" thank you for sharing yours with the rest of us - what an extraordinary life you have lived. It would be nice to think that all the young cats out there coul
d look at you as a role model - not just your music which is extraordinary in it's own expression, but your life. Thanks for being Pat!
P.S. What happened to the archive for November? What I find there are all the entries for October. Hope all's well in your world. Wishing you and yours a joyous and prosperous holiday season.
