Hi Dan, ...... As to the guages I use on the Gibson "PM Model", the heaviest is E-16, B-18, G-26, D-36 A-48 and E-58; the lightest is E-15, B-17, G-24, D-32, A-42 and E-52. I'm using GHS Semi - Flatwound; lowest, at the moment. That's due to touring through constantly different temperatures, along with humidity changes, etc.; (as well as the current condition of my "chops" on the basis of comfort). I hope the information proves helpful. ................ Best Wishes!

Dear Pat Martino: Many Happy Returns on your upcoming Birthday! God Bless you and Yours. Your "Live at Yoshi's" release is already a classic in guitaring lore. I'm still working on the lessons from February of 2000. I feel very fortunate and am eternally grateful for the time you gave me. I now have the PM signature model ( caramel custom ) and it is an instrument that transcends all styles and genres... my wish for you and yours is continued success, and please continue with the fantastic music. Your work is a great light blazing in the guitar and jazz world. My eternal gratitude. Sincerely, Don Plue .....and Happy Birthday!!

Hi Pat,I´m a guitarrist and a fan for a long time.My name is Patricia Deschamps. I join a group called Eclipse, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and we´re mixing our first CD. Bass player, Paulo Torres is going to New York on 04 of September,2001. He´s going to spend a few days there, so, we wandered of masterizing our work in some studio and also if you could give us orientations about:phones, adresses, costs etc.. Well, about costs, we have some limitations because it´s an independent work and we have no finantial support. So,we have to make a research first, but, anyway,we are trying the best. Antecipatedly, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you from Paulo Torres(bass),Aloísio Campello(guitar),Sergio Conforti(drums) and Patricia Deschamps(guitar).

Dear Jim (Taylor),
Thanks for coming out to The Catalina in Hollywood and participating in some precious moments along with the rest of us. As to the design of the Gibson PM Signature Model, I had the pleasure of working along with Mike McGuire, (Gibson's Operations Manager) on its distinctness. The back of the instrument has one oblong plate fastened with 4 small screws, to gain access to the instrument's electronics; similar to a Les Paul model. The guitar itself is semi hollow because of its F-Holes, with a solid block down the center of the body. The head of the guitar (designed by Mike McGuire) allows the strings to remain positioned in a straight order, as opposed to the normal slanted 3 strings each, (left and right) toward the tuning pegs. This allows less tension as well as more comfort in placing the first finger of the left hand behind the "nut", as if it were another closed fret, as opposed to seeing all six as open strings. Throughout the engagement, from 8/7 to 8/12/01 I used both the Custom (Cherry Sunburst) and the Standard (Black) Models. You were correct with regards to the Roland JC-120, but prior to entering its preamplified panel, the guitar cord goes thru a Lexicon MPX - 1 / Multiple Process FX (rack mounted unit) for any effects; what was used was reverb in a maneuverable Concert Hall setting. I hope this answers your questions and once again thanks for your support. .............................. Best Wishes!

Pat: thanks for the wonderful concert a Catalina's and for autographing my copy of "Live at Yoshi's." I wish I knew about your clinic at Sam Ash. However, I am curious about how you came about the design of your guitar. When I saw you take it off, I noticed a back access panel. Is it a solid back? Also, you were using a Roland Jazz Chorus but I looked like you were also plugged into some sort of other unit next to it. What type of set up do you use for a show like that? I have some friends who are also interested in these questions. Thanks again for an incredible show and come back soon. Jim

Hello Pat. I've been enjoying your playing for a number of years. Is that music you wrote on your computer ever going to be released? I'd really like to hear it! Not that I don't like your guitar playing still, but it would be interesting to hear what you do in a DIFFERENT context! For example, on "All Sides Now" hearing that duet with Michael Hedges - it came out beautifully, yet so unlike the normal Pat Martino licks! It's nice to see how a person meets situations where they can't just coast on their habit patterns!

Dear Pat, It was a joy to meet you and actually share such soulful, open conversation with you. Wow. I've never driven back to San Diego on such a philosophically/musically charged cloud! And if I may speak for everyone who hung out at the bar (including the bartender!), we all felt blessed with the opportunity to finally meet you. Thank you for the love, energy, honesty, and music. I really enjoyed your show and clinic in L.A. last weekend. I have been a student of your work for a few years but felt uncomfortable articulating these questions at your clinic so I would like to voice them now. You have a book "Jazz for Guitar" on REH (Hal Leonard) and there are two licks in that book that I saw you take to another level last week. When you demonstrated Hotline #6 (the displaced chromatic lick) at the clinic you continued the line on up the neck. Could you show us how to connect that line to the next position? I’m referring to the line you played right before you said “clear”. The reason we laughed was because it was so burning that to us mere mortals it wasn’t all that “clear”. The other lick I would enjoy hearing you expound on in the double stop hotline #8. I’ve seen these licks crop up in your music several times and would like to know more about them. The trick I couldn’t get about this line was how you played it over three octaves. I hope this isn’t any trouble Pat. Thanks for all the great music. We had a wonderful weekend driving up from San Diego. Did the tour of the stars homes and everything just to kill time 'till the clinic.

Would it be possible to get a copy of the handout that Pat used at his clinic in L.A. Sunday? Some of it is already on the website but I would like to get those voicings for "Welcome To A Prayer" and anything else that might be missing. I'm sure other people would enjoy an expansion of your Nature of Guitar section>

A follow-up on my 08/03 posting. Thursday night's SRO performance was phenomenal Pat. Thank you very much for the music and for signing my B&W stills. It really was a pleasure seeing and hearing you again. The night was made extra special by the presence of Sherman Ferguson, Harvie Mason and jazz icon Les McCann. Pat...I met you a couple weeks ago with my dad in Nashville, TN at the Gibson Custom Shop party. I'm 17 but I look about 23...lol. We first met in the entertainment area, and then inside the VIP room after you had played. As soon as I got home to Syracuse, NY from Nashville, I looked around for your CD's and I finally found a couple yesterday. I had heard of you before, and I'd heard a few fo your songs, before I saw your extremely modest performance at Gibson. When I finally listened to the CD's I bought (Cream and Live at Yoshi's), I was totally blown away. I had already been sorry that you hadn't played more at the Gibson party, but now I wish I'd dragged you back on stage! It was such a great pleasure and honor to have met you a few weeks ago. I finally found your website about 4 days ago (I never guessed that it would have simply been your name!). I've looked over many of the messages in this guestbook, and I want everyone to know what I told you at the Gibson party...Pat, you are the classiest guitar player I have ever seen. It's in the way you dress, it's in your actions, it's in the way you hold and play the guitar. You have class in everything you do, and you are what jazz is all about. You ARE jazz. When you got up and started playing dirty blues with Dickey Betts and Leroy Parnell at Gibson, I knew you were a true ringer and a master of the instrument. Pat, you have taught me what jazz is all about in only a few short (yet jazz-filled) days. Also, so you know, I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that Joey DeFrancesco was with you for the "Live At Yoshi's" gigs and CD...he played with Danny Gatton for a while, while he was still with us, who is another one of my favorite guitarists. But Pat, you are so far ahead of the pack... you play tastefully and your personality truly comes out through you playing. I have honestly never felt as good as I do today, after playing both Cream and Live at Yoshi's many many many times over the past two days. You seem to truly "know what it's all about", and as I'm sure you know, it's all about Jazz. You've made me realize that jazz is an art. It's a style, a feeling, a taste, a philosophy. Most of all, I've realized that Jazz cannot be characterized or explained. I think you get what I'm trying to say, Pat. Also, I want you to know that I have gotten heavily in to jazz playing (i also play the guitar and sing), when I mostly played blues and country before meeting you. I do know a few of Steely Dan's songs and I played in my school's Jazz Band this past year as a Senior, but your style feels right. I realize that I am rambling on now, and that I have probably been rather repetative tonight. I'm sorry. I'm still in awe from your CD's. (I can't play any music right now because it's rather late and my parents are in bed.) I want to thank you, Pat, for everything. Your music and your style and your class have all truly changed me for the better. I've seen life from 'both sides now', and I'm going to stay on the jazzy side. Thank you again, Pat. --Johnny Musacchio

Pat, I am looking forward in seeing you at Catalina's! The one and only time I saw you perform was at the same place in November of 1997. Last year, I was disappointed that your gig at The Jazz Bakery (November 2000) got cancelled. Anyhow, I am excited to listen to you live again. I will buy the "Live at Yoshi's" CD this weekend and listen to it before I see you. In closing, the beautiful JOYOUS LAKE LP cover with your greeting and signature on it hangs on my wall and is one that I will treasure always. PEACE. Nick

Hi Pat.. Give you a little background on me I grew up listening to Jazz. My father was a jazz tenor saxaphone player in the Boston area. As a kid I would listen to artist's such as Stan Getz, Buddy Defranco, lee konitz, George benson and many others. However, unfortunatlly I had never heard of you...that is until now.One day on the way home from work I stopped at a Border book store and they had your new CD Live at Yoshi's on display. What had caught my attention was Joey on the cover. I have a few tapes on him and he's awesome. When I sampled the CD in the store your guitar playing Blew my mind. You definetly rank amoung the worlds finest jazz guitar players. That CD is my kind of music. Please let me know when your coming to Boston MA? I will be that for that. Take care Gary Karl
